Hope to again have a few educational events around the St. Louis area. If anyone wants to come and speak on some aspect, please let me know. I can stand there and talk, but I'm not as perky as I used to be. Seriously thinking maybe somebody who participates in Project Martin Watch could talk on value of nest checks and about keeping the data. Maybe do one at Cahokia Mounds (Illinois metro side of St. Louis) and maybe one at Creve Coeur Park in St. Louis County. John Miller

I am surprised you can even think about martins for the next week or so with the Cardinals in the world series.

Martin Colony History: 2009-2015-Helped to manage Raleigh site, 36 cavities
2016- 33 pairs at Raleigh site, 1 pair at home site.
2017- 34 pairs at Raleigh site, 3 pairs + extra SYs at home site
2018- 33 pairs at Raleigh site, 5 pairs + extra SYs at home site
2019 - 32 pairs at Raleigh site, 7 pairs at home site, 2 pairs at new Holly Springs park site

1. To re-establish a satellite site that had martins in the past and then lost them.
2. To successfully fix up a new satellite site owned by the town (right now we have hit some serious snags in the process).
3. To increase active membership in the NC Purple Martin Society and find others to help out with activities and planning.
4. To establish a colony at home.

Of course, these have been my goals for a few years now, with the exception of #2.

Every year I don't accomplish #4, I plant a new garden somewhere, or fix up an old one, so at least my yard is getting prettier.

Martin Colony History: 2013-2016 Unsuccessful at starting a PM colony. Health problems.
Rehomed all my PM stuff. Good Luck and Best Wishes to All.

1) Keep at those S&S (doing it year round)
2) Increase my colony from founding pair to full house. My neighbor has 16 gourds and her home is for sale, so I may have some displaced birds take up residence!
3) Contact as many area PM landlords as I can (drive-by/ knock on the door) and ask them to join PMCA. It would be great to accompany an experienced Landlord on a nestcheck.
4) Continue to learn about Purple Martins, and talk about them everywhere!
5) Support my Purple Martin friends by maintaining PMCA membership and being part of this wonderful forum. I also can lend a helping hand to area PM landlords.

Gourds are down and clean.
1. Continue year around Starling and EHS control.
2. Late December, load pine needles with a dash of Sevin and hoist them up - still plugged.
3. Late January, open a few holes on rack 1 - they showed up early in February last year.
4. Hope to add a few pair this year - had 26 pair last year, have 40 total gourds available - all SREH with porches.
5. Enjoy the Martins - We have had them around since late 60's but I just started properly managing them since I found this place a few years ago and a sky full of Martins is good for your spirits.

Hope everyone has a great productive season in 2014
Cheers,
Joe

Martin Colony History: I started trying to attract Purple Martins in 2011. I got my first breeding pair in 2013.

2013-1 pair, 2014-4 pair, 2015-8 pair, 2016-12 pair 60 babies :-).

My goal is to move from one pair to multiple pairs. I desire full occupancy, which would equal eight nesting pairs. If I get half of that I will be very happy!!!

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

Some of the gourd arms are sagging. I will prop them up so that they again will be level. After Christmas Day, start hanging gourds.
