A martin or two could be on the way north from Brazil about now... or maybe not for a few more weeks yet. First arrivals reported in Florida the last 5 years: Dec 21, 2008-Punta Gorda; Dec 23, 2009-Naples; Jan 5, 2011-Lake Suzy; Jan 11, 2012-Melbourne; Dec 19, 2012-Viera. We won't know til we get a report, so Florida landlords, please keep your ears alert for that familiar, welcome sound. Have a few compartments or gourds available about a week to 10 days before your average arrival date. And get ready to enjoy the happiness that Purple Martins bring!

Yup, just flying around and eating bugs and hanging out is about over, time to finish growing a fresh coat of feathers and start heading north!

2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows.
2017 0ne pair of subbies nested and fledged 4 young
2018 Tree Swallows AGAIN chased away any martins that wanted to nest
2019 Same old story................

- Martin Colony History: 5th year hostess. Currently 58 confirmed breeding pair. 218 Fledged, 35 older nestlings, 2 new nests with 8 nestlings. 100% occupancy
I'm right there with you D'Nese! I too am watching the Florida Scout report! It won't be long now!
God give them a safe ocean flyover and bring them safely back to their nesting locations. If their nesting homes have been removed then guide them to those who wait for the chance to show them a new, safe and well maintained nesting home! Grant us caretakers the wisdom to feed them if it is too cold and the tenacity to keep doing so until the weather breaks.

Hi D'nese and I happy that you have followed my posting from last year. I really hope that I have a few more pairs than last year. The great thing is that I am retiring in Jan 2014 and I will be able to watch them all season. I had a little hawk problem, but I will be able to keep an eye out on him.
