Purple Martin story on local news this afternoon

For those of you that live in the North Alabama area, WAFF 48 in Huntsville will be running a story this afternoon about the huge Purple Martin site in Rainsville, AL. My sister is an anchor for WAFF and I gave them a tip about this after I returned from Martinfest last year. They have apparently gotten around to doing the story and they found it interesting enough to run. She says it will run during the 4:00 news hour and will probably be in the 4:30 half hour segment.

Martin Colony History: Colony started - 2007 with one pair
As of 2018 - 84 cavities offered, max # of pairs hosted - 82.

I've seen the pictures of this site before. I hope you can post a video of the story later....wonder if they'll link it on their website or something?

He only had 1067 pair last year and after MartinFest he was going home to put up more gourd racks! It is a full time job for him and his hired man. I counted over 60 racks and I don't know how many gourds are on the two lines between those poles in the background.

For those who want to find it on a map: 2406 Kirk Road Southwest, Rainsville, AL
2016 - 6 cavities in Royal Wing/S&K house + 6 BO9 gourds with tunnels/porches on pole 1, 6 BO9 gourds with tunnels/porches on pole 2
2015 - new homebuilt 3 cavity house plus 3 BO9 gourds with tunnels porches on second pole, in addition to prior setup. 15 pairs, 54 fledged
2014 - 6 6x12 house cavities (plastic Royal Wing/S&K), plus 6 BO9 gourds with tunnels/porches offered; 12 pairs, 50 fledged

Thanks, Malcolm! That is an awesome colony! Good thing he has help, otherwise, I don't know how he'd clean all those gourds. :lol:

I didn't get to see the "purple martians" as the title of the video said, but I'll go back and look for them again later. 8) :lol:[/u]

Well they corrected the "martians" misspelling at about the minute mark in the video with "purpal martin host." So all is well that ends well.

Wow! You could even see the lines for hanging gourds on the top side(I assume North) of that pond!
