I've talked about the public colony from time to time over the last couple years and thought I would give everyone on here a quick tour of the major portions. This is not all of the available housing but the bulk of what we have done work on.

As far as I can tell at the peak Parsons had 78 total martin houses installed with approximately 400 pairs of martins. That was around the 1994 or 1995 timeframe. Prior to the start of this project(2012) there were about 40 pairs of martins in about 50 houses. With maybe 30 houses unoccupied.

For the sake of this tour if I say a new house was installed it means it has expanded compartments and SREH.. same for an Upgraded house.

Here is where it all started, the colony was founded here.. well prior to the planting of the trees you see(ugh)... Notice the sign in the background with two martins on it. The 4 houses in the foreground are all expanded compartment with SREH. The two castles in the back ground have not had a nesting bird since I started working with the colony. They will be retrofit in the next couple years.
Image

These 3 houses are next to the above houses.. you can see the trees are an issue and these houses struggle to get birds.. the bradfords are in the dieing stage and hopefully they fall over soon. Until then they are good decoys to keep the HOSP busy. a new house here, on upgraded, and one old stock 12 compartment house.
Image

This section is diagonal across a 4 lane street from the original section. Here are 2 retrofit MK-12's to expanded compartments and 3 new house/pole combinations. There are probably 10 nesting pairs in these houses this year. Notice how close the road and bank drive way are. The traffic does not appear to bother the martins and in 3 years of monitoring I have only seen one fatality due to collision with cars.
Image

One upgraded MK-12 and one new house pole combination. Currently 5 or 6 pairs here.
Image

Lonestar Alamo - purchased via BOGO PMCA grant program, one new house pole, one one existing 12 compartment winch style trio with wrap around porch. Currently hosting at least 6 pair.
Image

1 new house pole combination... 3, 12 compartment houses that have been repaired. No martins currently likely due to tree issues. It will host again as at least 2 houses are acceptable if population levels are high enough.
Image

One new house and pole.. I call this the donut shop house as it sits on a 3 or 4 sq ft patch of grass in front of a donut shop. No green space around.. it currently hosts 2 or 3 pair. Great PR here as people are getting in and out of cars all morning to get donuts. Typically this is the first house of the year to get martins.. must be the donut grease.
Image

Upgraded castle to 12 expanded compartments, 2 new houses. Another great PR spot as this location is probably the 2nd or 3rd busiest intersection in town. Currently is near capacity I would say 14 or 15 pairs minimum. By now I think folks should rest easy knowing traffic is not an issue for starting a colony.
Image

Three new houses and 2 new poles. This colony section had been unoccupied for at least 5 years prior to this one. Currently there are 1 possibly 2 pairs here with at least one other SY male. Big victory for our work as this is an ideal location with a pond and lots of walking traffic.
Image

Replaced an old gourd rack with the MPP from Tony.. two new houses on it. Also one old 12 compartment in the background.
Image

Well that's all the photos I have.. there are probably 20 more houses not shown, but these are the most interesting ones. Feel free to toss out any questions you may have. Hope you enjoyed it.

Very Nice, Andrew! I feel like I just went on a tour of Parsons! You are doing a wonderful job, and your housing looks nice, especially the ones with purple martins on them!

Andrew,

I really enjoyed your tour. I hope some day to increase the martin population in my own town. I doubt I will ever get to the number of houses you are monitoring.

Question. Do you ever get complaints about droppings on cars with the houses so close to traffic and parking lots.

Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.

Andrew,
Your work in Parsons is awe inspiring.
It makes my efforts in my community pale in comparison to your contributions.

Mary,
If I am correct, then Joplin, MO are about 50 miles ESE from Parson, KS. Some really healthy SYs are going to be looking for nice, new colonies next year. Now I understand why you teasingly said that you were going to put up a Trio/Nature House, Inc. house at your site. After that they are going to move up to the Waldorf-Astoria of purple martin houses, your Trendsetter.
Seriously, your Trendsetter will be the cat's meow to them from the beginning.

I've had none. Honestly I don't even see droppings under the busiest of houses. The only places that are really messy are the ones with HOSP in residence.

When I started my home colony.. I chose trio for the main reason that every house I saw around was a Trio... some believe that martins imprint on trios around here.

Andrew,

Do you the Trio ground socket or are the poles set directly in concrete?

All new poles are in a socket... I'm not a huge fan of the stock trio socket but it works.

Andrew,
Over the years I have seen various "ground sockets" that people have used.
The worse was a tight fitting PVC pipe. The pole was basically "welded" to the PVC pipe by corrosion of the zinc coating and/or lime like build up from ground water seepage. That PVC pipe fit too tight against the pole.
I agree that the original Trio/Nature House, Inc. ground socket is not perfect but at least the small space between ground socket and pole allows the pole to be removed if needed.
The worse thing I have encounter with the Trio/NH ground socket is when the person skips the pea gravel drainage and/or the means to stop cement from filling up the ground socket.
I am not suggesting you skip any steps. You have a lot more experience with the Trio system.

I upgrade the ground socket with stainless steel bolts and several other improvements which may overcome some of the original shortcomings of the original Trio/NH ground socket.

Good wisdom.. we had several original systems fail due to improper drainage on the poles.. water would build up in the pole then a freeze would split the pole... then the next storm would bend it or blow it over.

Did a formal nest count of the expanded compartment housing..

62 active nests as of 6-12-14.. Didn't count every nest last season, but it was around 40. There are another 10-15 in some relatively unmanaged housing that I just don't have time for, but those don't count for these purposes. There are currently 170 available expanded compartments. That number will be close to 250 next season, mainly by converting existing 12 compartment trios and castles.

Overall there are currently 356 cavities available in the portion I watch.. when the retrofit project is complete that number will drop to under 300.

Will do.. there have been martins seen on it, but none have taken to it this season.(I did get it up a hair late) I expect nice growth in that section the next few years so I am sure it will have some takers soon. I will let you know when it does.
