Things have been jumping around here this morning for some reason. I had 3 or 4 new pairs of martins show up. There are at least 6 maybe 8 new birds here today. Lots of lookie-looin going on, lots of fighting too! I don't know if they've lost their housing in the recent storms, or just stopping by on their way back south. Best I can tell, they are all ASY birds. All I know is my back yard is full of martins!
I would think it would be too late for renesting here in the south, but I don't know. They don't have any babies with them, and that strikes me as odd. They've been here quite a while too, several hours. Any thoughts?
Tony

Hey Tony- I'm guessing they're still coming north. I'm seeing the same thing here with new birds visiting- all ASY birds with no young with. I think they're going to settle in and then they're gone. I recorded my first SY last year around 5/21 I think and have yet to see one at home or my public site. I could be way off but that's what I'm thinking. At home I only have half the birds I had last year.

Perhaps you will double your colony, here in the 9th inning! That would be a Father's Day present like none other! I'd say if they are fighting, they are working on territory issues for housing rights...

Or, a real loooong shot- maybe they are late migrants, on their way north to the land of empty houses (mine)! Only 16 days left before June 30 deadline here...

Either way, let us know how this turns out!

PS: Dave W, I am really sending out a big fat wish that you are right, maybe they are just late and heading our way!

Dave,
I would think it's way to late for ASY's to be just now showing up this far south. I could be wrong, I think I was... once

Mary,
If Dave is right, and these are ASY's just now heading north, I sure wouldn't mind sharing with you. I think you've earned it!

lynnh,
That was my first thought when they showed up. I've read about it here, but never seen it happen. Maybe since there was no fledging today, they thought they'd look around a bit. 3 or 4 of them are still hanging around.
Tony

Tony,
I think Lynn is probably spot on; one of your other posts mentioned fledging due tomorrow, so that is probably the most likely scenario. It was that way last year for me. Cheers to seeing those new babies in flight!

Well apparently Lynn, you were right. I did have 2 of 5 babies fledge late yesterday afternoon, and all the visitors went home. I guess the rest will go for it today. Hey, that gives me something to do on fathers day! I've been watching the babies since daylight and I have to say, one of them is doing remarkably well. He's got this flying and landing thing down pat. I don't understand why the others keep knocking them off the gourd rack. They don't get much time to rest at all. What fun!

I just picked up a surprise new pair of ASY birds last weekend. Nest building looks complete now. My first pair have birds about to fledge any day. Looks like my summer plans are about to change. It's going to be a long summer at the beach!

Thanks Lynn.
Way to go Al, I hope you pick up that extra pair. And hey, a long summer at the beach doesn't sound like a bad idea to me!
