Hello from Duck Lake Saskatchewan
I am new to the forum. I am located in Duck Lake Saskatchewan. I just erected a T14 on a 21' Aluminum 3"x3" 3/16" wall aluminum pipe which is concreted 3' into the ground in a 4' deep hole. I see that a lot of people use the ground stake on the 1/8" Aluminum pipe. I went a bit more heavy duty with a direct install. Someone at PMCA said that the reason ground stakes are used is so the pipe can be taken down or repaired. Anyone with the same setup? I have 18' of pipe height from the ground.

Welcome to the forum Brad. I am sorry I can't help you with your questions , I just wanted to post to say it is nice to see someone else on here from Saskatchewan. Good luck this year, and SY birds haven't returned yet so you still have plenty of time to get your colony started. Especially since there are several colonies in Prince Albert, those young birds will have to fly right by you on their way home. Always a good chance snagging one of them.

Hello from Manitoba, Brad. Nice looking house. I have a t-14 on a 2x2" square tube. I bought a 20' tube and slide it into a 4' ground sleeve, leaving 16' above ground. If I ever need to move the house, the tube will slide out and leave the sleeve behind at ground level.
Any starlings out at Duck Lake? They are a major hazard to Purple Martin life. Good news is they can be kept out of your great looking house with an entrance plate called SREH (Starling resistant entrance hole)

madattiver, I know of a couple very active colonies just on the edge of Prince Albert. I have also observed a house at Emma Lake that has a colony right on the beach. The Martins have a nest site ion Duck Lake and I have never seen this before. Some bricks fell out of the wall of the Crossings restaurant and the martins actually are nesting in the wall of the restaurant. If you ever go to Duck Lake check it out.

Martins have come and gone but never stayed at that location. Perhaps not very ideal location. Even though the Sparrows were controlled at the time. However last summer Starlings took up residence in the house so we trapped the Starlings. I seen a couple Starlings show up again this year at that house. So far no Starlings at my T14 in Duck Lake. Only a couple house sparrows which we quickly took care of. However we have numerous bluebird boxes around our 16 acres and there is a lot of Tree swallows this year. There is a pair messing around with the T14. From past experience Tree Swallows are very territorial and I have seen they chase Martins. Hopefully they will find another location to build a nest or we may have to relocate them.

Hi Brad. My pole is steel and not sure on the thickness, guesing 3/16th.
Your 3 inch Aluminum should be plenty strong. I prefer to lower my t-14 in high wind situation, it sways a little in a strong wind.
Would be fun to see a picture of the Martins nesting in the bricks.

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.

Great looking T14. Your 3/16" wall thickness aluminum square pole sounds great. At 16' above ground I would still lower it in high wind conditions but you know best about your location and wind conditions.
That pole must have cost an arm and a leg.
The martins nesting in the brick wall sounds very interesting albeit risky for them.

madattiver, if your driving towards Prince Albert I am on the East side of the highway just after you pass the Lady of Lords Shrine. There is a creek you will cross just before Chante Lake. You will see my T14 from the highway right on the creek very easy to find. Come by anytime.

The ground sleave. At least for me is there incase of poll damage. It makes it easier to put a new poll in the ground quickly.

I am so glad to see you chose the T-14 ! I am so happy with the ones I have. I have had the North Sky one and it is gone. I see you are using the aluminiun pole , how did that work out for you and did you order it or buy it locally? I have 2 T-14's and they have to be the best PM house on the market IMO. , I also have BO-11 gourds hanging underneath and they are always full.

Yeah the T14 is a great design and very easy to maintain etc. I bought the aluminum pipe at a specialty metal company in Saskatoon. I actually bought 2 so I can put up another T14. I am interested in the gourds will probably add for next year. If you don't mind send some photos of your setup.

I will try this weekend, not sure how with the new phone and posting. I started with one T-14 to replace the North and was so impressed with it I ended up building one instead of buying. I have 2 now and the only maintenance so far would be a paint job on the roofs.
