Hi all,
Sorry I haven't been around. Work is killing me and I've been gone a few weekends, but I read up every chance I get.
What was turning out to be a crappy year has started to turn around a little bit. I've lost a total of 3 ASY males. My first nest of 6 eggs didn't hatch, & sparrows must be getting smarter around here.
But as of today's nest check My failed nest of 6 has started renesting. They now have 3 new eggs. I have 1 nest of 4 babies out of 5 eggs, a nest with 5 eggs and some newcomers!!! I now have a fourth pair! WHOOP!!! WHOOP!!! They have their first egg today.

Martin Colony History: 5th year hostess. Currently 58 confirmed breeding pair. 218 Fledged, 35 older nestlings, 2 new nests with 8 nestlings. 100% occupancy

Martin Colony History: I started trying to attract Purple Martins in 2011. I got my first breeding pair in 2013.

2013-1 pair, 2014-4 pair, 2015-8 pair, 2016-12 pair 60 babies :-).

Tony, I'm glad to hear you are up to four pairs! That's great. I've been watching my martins recently. All of them are feeding young except for one pair that's still incubating eggs. It is fascinating watching them come and go from the gourds. It is constant activity that is well coordinated too. They have been feeding right up until dark! Last check I had 29 nestlings. One set (in gourd J) is right at 20 days old, so they may fledge next week!

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Sorry about the three males. I am sure that had to be tough and a huge concern for you with your new colony. BUT hey yay! Happy for ya too!

Yeah I was concerned when I found the first two dead from entrapment because it was early on in the season, but then equally concerned with the male dead in with the 6 eggs. My biggest fear was they wouldn't hatch, and if they did would she be able to go it alone with 6.
But it all works it's self out.

As of 2018 - 84 cavities offered, max # of pairs hosted - 82.
