I haven't been on here in a while, and getting ready to do nest checks/changes on Saturday if it quits raining long enough! Was wondering if we need to worry about bird flu this season or is it just poultry? We are in Ohio

Who can help me with this question? We plan to wear disposable gloves and maybe even a dust mask

Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.

I have not heard much about any bird flu that humans could attract from purple martins, but if you feel the need to wear those protective garments, it will not hurt.

I hope that everything is ok in your nests, since it has been raining a lot.

Let us know how you make out with the nest checks?

Thanks,

Bill in PA

Avian flu is reality; it does exist. Has it been a problem? No. Not that I know of anyway.

Use good infection control
