Leaving my former home of 30 years was difficult as I had so much wildlife for living in town. My yard had a NWF Backyard Habitat designation. This is my 6th summer here and I have finally regained my Backyard Mom status.
I'm am having so much fun. I expect 2 nests to fledge Tues/Wed. Have new eggs in 2 units. New nest in one gourd and lookers in another gourd. I also have 10 wrens/4 barn swallows in bluebird house and 5 youngster bluebirds being fed on the power line by parents. So glad I was warned about mites. Nasty. I am going to try oregano essential oil on my next hatchling nest change. I think I will put it on a qtip under the nest.
How soon can I clean out old nesting once fledged?

Congrats, its fun having lots of wildlife around. As soon as the last one jumps you could take out the old and give them some clean bedding to come home to in the evening.

I have seen somewhere that Diatomaceous Earth is a good mite preventative. Sprinkle some in the gourd before thay nest. I have never tried it but will next year.
I think the barnies on my front porch may be giving me them when they buzz me.
