Any word if either of these features are, or will be, available on this website again? I am trying to contact someone on this forum but can't seem to figure it out. Thanks.

Try Google. I have googled many people and if they are purple martin landlords you might be able to find them. Try googleing yourself and see who you are.

Martin Colony History: 85 pair in 2020. Seems fairly consistent the last few years.

I for one would like to view a list of members and see just how many are from each state and particularly those in Mo., Where I'm at and then just be able to click on any particular member and private message through the forum. Maybe it is possible here and I just do not know it.

Neither feature is an option at present - if that changes in the future, we'll let forum members know. In the meantime, you can ask them to supply email via a forum post, if you like.

Forum Admin,
I too would like to be able to view other folks who are Purple Martin Landlords locations. That would be neat if you offered it for every state. I know there is bound to be more Martin Landlords in my area. There is so many great locations around here - plenty of food and water. Looks like to me if you are a member, you would naturally want others to know that you are a member and that you Care for the Birds - Go Figure - Why wouldn't you ??
I think it would generate a lot more closeness and bonding among the existing members.
Maybe it would also generate more participation in not only the "Forum" but local Purple Martin organizations as well.
I was talking to Courtney R. Who is web master and I believe president of The North Carolina Purple Martin Association.

I wanted to start attending some of the meetings. She informed me that it would be great to have new members attend instead of just the same old 4 or 5 every time. I can see where that would get somewhat boring after a while. Plus it doesn't do anything for the moral of the officers of the local organizations or clubs.

I mean it's all for the sake of the Purple Martins that we even come together, either on the "Forum" or state or local Associations. I don't know, maybe there is something I'm missing. I would be very proud to tell my friends that North Carolina had a large number of Purple Martin Landlords, and that a large number of them are members of the PMCA Forum.

To me it's No Secret - I want everyone to know that I like Purple Martins, and that I enjoy hosting them as a Landlord each and every year. And yes I think most people who are serious about the Birds feel just the same as I do.
All any of us want to do is talk about our Birds and our little operation that we have in our back yards. All the extra communication can only invariably benefit the very thing we all are doing this for, and that is the Love and well being of these amazing Birds that we are so blessed to be able to keep each year.
I am a Purple Martin Fan - Don't Get Me Started.....................!!

You guys may notice that I end each of my posts with "Larry from western Kentucky" 8) I don't give my last name but do let people know approximately where I live. Others on this forum might also give their general location as well. Just a thought!

The old forum used to have your name and location on the left. So I updated my signature as well and put it there. I also miss the topics list not showing who made the original post. It just shows who last commented on the thread. I have been using my phone to view because I splashed some water on my laptop. Oops. Maybe on a computer screen it has these things I desire.

Hi DebA,
On my I-Pad if you scroll all the way back to the top, you will recover the original Post. Not sure on my Lap top, just haven't tried it.

I mean on the topics page. Maybe I don't want to read everybody's stuff. :)

I usually do but for instance if Avesrun establishes a home colony this year and posts about it that I want to know. Especially when I am taking a quick break and peek.

DebA, and others who just want a quick peek, there is a feature on this forum called "topic tools" and it's found right beside the "post reply" button. It has a little wrench in the box. Click on the that box and you get a menu where is lets you subscribe to that topic. When you come back the next time to the forum, in the top right corner of the page is a box called notifications, and it tells you if anybody has posted to the topics you have subscribed to.

Thanks, Archer! That still isn't the author at a glance but I tried to figure out that feature as well.

Well I got my laptop to mostly work. Just like the older forum it does show who the author of the post is. So when I am on my mobile is when I can't see that. But glad to see it is like it was.

Hellow DebA and all! I look at the new forum kind of like a hand of cards that gets dealt to you; some good cards and maybe some difficult to work with. The bee will bumble, the cookie crumble, and the thunder rumble and we roll with it and make the best. The dealer in this case has to be trusted that they're wanting to deal out the best hand for all interested. Seems most folks on the forum are dealing with it; pun intended.

DebA the home site is up and ready with hopeful improvements. This will be year 5 waiting. I have moved both poles to better locations; hopefully. One location you could say is a research project. I've moved the pole out into the corn/soybean field about 20-30 ft. to get it further away from a line of trees behind my house. This is a corn year so it will be interesting. When the martins are scoping and/or early nesting phase (think knee high by the fourth of July) the corn will not be an issue; however, I plan to keep a 15-20ft. area around the pole clear of the corn. I believe my snake predator guard to be effective and I added a 2 ft. extension on the pole to keep tall. Darn corn gets 8-9 ft. tall in the good ol' Iowa topsoil. I haven't measured but believe the pole approaches 16ft. presently. I've also turned that pole into mostly a gourd rack; it is a multi-purpose pole with 2 trios and 9 various gourds. As always my hopes are high but kept in check; I've had enough martin visitors that hope remains strong.

Not a day goes by I am not grateful for being blessed last season with martins at the quarry satellite site. I've added another pole there. Not sure what to expect ; however, I believe I could have a large increase there based on the 50+ visitors that showed up at fledge time for the two nests I had there. I do "fret" about a lot as you know :) and the latest fret is how the Tree Swallow dynamic is going to play out. You wouldn't believe the swarms of them that show up there about the same time as the martins. They could deal the martins a bad hand especially since the "colony" is so small. I think if the martins succeed again this season and at least double the nests I won't have to worry about TS in the future; they all will learn their place.

Here's a photo of yours truly at the quarry of the 2016 setup minus a predator guard and a feeding/nest material pole that I've put up since the photo. Also thinking of adding snake netting above the guards.

Best of luck in 2016; noticed you increased to 27 pair in 2015 which is amazing. This greenhorn is thankful to you and all other forum members who've helped me along the martin landlord journey.

Hey Tim,
Great pic. Looks like a Great location there at the quarry. Is that a T-14 and 2 Sunset Inn houses?

Hello Roger. Yes on both. Last season had just the T14 and 4 gourds; after 3 seasons got two martin pairs; one sy male/asy female and the other sy male/sy female. Had a little run-in with combination of lots of rain and high humidity causing a Troyer Horizontal gourd with six young to turn into a sweat lodge and making a wet foul nest. It happened real close to fledge time thus wasn't able to catch it on a nest check and had jumpers. Lost at least one of the young maybe two. The other nest had 5 young and believe they successfully fledged.

Added the mp pole w/ Sunset Inn houses for this season. Had over 50 martins hanging around the site by the end of the season so optimistic for 2016. I did add wing protection to all the sunset Inn entrances and converted half of the crescent openings to Conley II plates with wing entrapment protection. Also added two Troyer vertical gourds to the mix under the Sunset Inn houses.

The site has absolutely no human houses, structures, or buildings around so was pretty happy to get martins to nest. It's only about 2.5 miles from my home so I'm able to check on it frequently. It's owned by Des Moines Water Works for supplemental water supply to Des Moines and managed by the Iowa DNR. So far no human vandalism and keeping my fingers crossed in that regard. The area will be open to the public in 1-2 years for fishing, hiking, birding, and canoes and kayaks will be the only vessels allowed on the water. I'm proud to say that I was able to establish the official name of the site to be Purple Martin Lake Water Resource Area :) I've got the signs on order. Waiting for funds to be budgeted for a road access and parking area and the area will open soon thereafter. It's been a fun endeavor thus far and I look forward to giving public martin programs there along with other nature and water quality related programs. The martin setup will eventually have interpretive signage(that's in the works too) and a small bleacher area for watching and observing martins. Take care and have a GREAT 2016 season your way!

Hey Tim,
Wow seems like you've been busy. You're really gettin-r-done with all the things you're starting. Also Great that the site was named with Purple Martins in mind. Just hope no vandalism occurs when they open up. You've really done a lot for the Birds.
I'm sure you'll be rewarded by attracting a lot of Birds to that site, it looks like a great place for Martins.
You got it going on man - keep it up.! Remember the Martins need all the help they can get. It's plain to see you're really making a contribution. Thank you so much for all the hard work.
Good Luck with the 2016 Season and with all you're endeavors.!
