Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

I attached my 2 houses this afternoon! It was fairly nice outside to do it! I'm feeling good about trying to duplicate the site up the road! And no I haven't enlarged the cavities! My focus is trying to get martins. When I get them I can make it better for them! I'm trying to duplicate the site where my visitors come from! I'm not sure if I'll attach the gourds under the houses until I get a pair. I have a gourd rack so if they want gourds they can pick them! Image
Thanks Tony G for a house that I see all over town! :)

Looking great! you will like those trios placed on a 2" rack, works out so much better than on the poles that come with them.

 Looking GREAT Sharon !!, Now, if you ever want to, see the lower nuts & bolts on the bottom of the hub, you can take out the 2 front or back ones, get some angle aluminum, about 42" & drill out 2 center holes to bolt it to the hub, & 4 holes for small hanging gourd arms ! That's what mine looks like ! Great ! about using a MSS-12 !

Yeah Anthony these have 4 brackets I put on the hub and I can hang gourds. The hanging arms come with the setup! I'm thinking about waiting a year. I'm trying to duplicate the site that is a mile + away. I have time to think about it! Thanks for your support! :)

Ray I have a trio that is on a small round pole and it's got a winch! Not user friendly and to noise! If I get Martin I may get another MPP and put it on it! Thanks for your support!

Before you erect the system I strongly suggest you add an emergency stop to prevent the house from hitting you if your rope or cable breaks while you're raising or lowering it. A 5/16" hex bolt in a hole bored through the pole and secured with a wing nut should work. Locate it so in the event of a failure the house will stop before it hits your head. If you need it lower than that level for nest checks, lower it to just before the bolt, remove the bolt, then carefully lower it the rest of the way. -- John

Sharon, I may be wrong ( ) , but I think you might want to remove the hub & rotate your pole one side to the " left " so that the pulley system is in between the houses, if you haven't done that already  , if I'm wrong, :???: I'll just Shut Up !!

Made a roof out of some rolled aluminum that was left over from when they did my roof on the house! The one house had a pole going through it! I'll be spray foaming the attic cavity and pop riveting the new roof onto the old roof! Any suggestions welcome!Image

Thank you Kyler, it's gonna be exciting to see them and how they react to the same setup as up the road! I have noticed one of the houses up the road is missing! Whoop whoop! But he may just be repairing it! The doors were falling off a few cavities   He's not a friendly man! Very few words spoken when I stopped up there! He told me he had 30 pair and I seen maybe 8! Oh well he may have had 30 birds there at one time when they all go to one setup to another! I'll post a picture of the MPP pole when I get the roof done and get it in the air! Thanks agin!

Hey Sharon,
I've had the same reaction from a couple of my neighbors. It is somewhat discouraging when you just try to offer friendship about something you both must have in common - Martin's.!! One neighbor has like a 20ft. Pole with homemade Fountain Type arms. He has made it looks to me like 5" x 5" square bird houses.?.? Way to Small!!!!!! And he probably doesn't do any nest checks because the only way you can get his pole down is to (Lean) it down.
I have a friend that lives right down below him and I've never seen any Martin's at his place.!!!!!
I tried to be cordial and talk and tried to suggest going on the internet or writing the PMCA.! He told me he'd been keeping Martin's since he was a young Boy and had all the Bird's he wanted - Yeah Right!!!!!!!
He's got to be like in his 70's or 80's and may be embarrassed or not know how to use a computer.? A lot of older folks are like that.! And they don't want to learn either --- it's kinda sad - technology is passing them by.
Remember what I said about leading a Horse to Water <^^??^^>.......................

Yes Anthony I love the hgtv shows! Right up my alley! :)

Yes Rodger some people just think they know everything and won't bring themselves to let someone give them advice! Oh well I just hope the one house that is down right now won't be going back up! 8)
