Female welcomed us home from work, shouting greetings at us before tucking in for the night. WOW, too darned early, but forecast calls for a good warm stretch and we'll care for them well as always! Get those racks up southern MO.

- Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

Yes Kyler, I reported via the scout reporting page this evening. I imagine administration must go thru their routine of checking out early season scout reports before allowing them to go thru.
We've had Much worse arrival weather so I'm not too concerned as long as the forecasted 10-day warm stretch holds.

Thanks Keith, I'll be watching for yours, Kathy's and others along a southern MO line from Joplin/Web City/Carthage to Licking and Farmington where we all report fairly close together each year.
She sure was vocal at greeting us before turning in for the evening - wonderful sound, although quite unexpected so early. I'm sure she's a little lonely for her purple friends, but the southern winds over next several days should bring some partners in.

Congratulations Jeff.
I got caught up in genealogy research a while back...have a great (x3) grandfather Robinson, William, born 1821, in Virginia and moved to Bedford County TN...we might be cousins. William was a carpenter, according to 1850 census, so I bet he made a few purple martin houses.

Thank you John! As for the genealogy - it is quite possible. Just so happens my sister has our family tree figured pretty far back, supposedly with Honest Abe somewhere in our mix, so I'll check with her about Mr. William Robinson as well.

Yeah Joe, I have 1 to 2 birds that show fairly early each year and the others follow about a week or so later. She's still a loner, out flying high overhead most of the day the last couple days, then darts right into the gourd @ 5:45pm without peep or fanfare.
I have all cavities open since I'm not having as many problems with HSP this Spring...likely experiencing stage fright due to accuracy of my new Diana RWS 34/.22 air rifle using the RWS Superdomes. It's a tack driver, especially with martin housing only 32 yards from my back door. Bluebirds also helping with the chase.

I went ahead and opened 4 gourds just in case. Hs is always a pretty good war at the beginning lol. I added 24 more gourds this year so I'm sure I'll have a little hs war lol. Keep us posted . Joe

Just thought I would mention to you that I finally had a female Purple show up at our house today, just one day earlier than last year. I sure hope your bird or birds made it through our cold weather the last few days. Expecting more reports from southern Mo. anytime. Take care and hope we both have a successful season.

Great news Keith, let it begin. My lone girl is still here and doing fine, and i expect company will start showing up any day now. She vocalized cheer when i flipped her crickets on Sunday after the snow.
