Van Ert Starling Box Trap

I bought one of these a couple years ago. I'm really impressed with the trapping method of eliminating Starlings.

As the Martins have been arriving at our Colony they have attracted Starlings in singles & pairs to the area to check out the houses & gourds we have. Eventually they will check out the Trap box and give me a chance to eliminate them from the group. I put the trap on a light duty metal pole and raise & lower it as it catches birds. And it does catch everything.

It is 12' off of the ground and I caught 7 Blue Birds last week. You have to leave them in there for a couple of hours. If you release them immediately they will go right back into the Trap.

Just thought I would mention this, as it took me years before I ever bought one. But it is great to come Home and have caught a Starling while you were gone.

I second that Spiderman. I have 2 of the Van Ert Starling Box Traps. They are one of the fastest spring traps on the market, and they literally do catch everything that goes into them. I did have some trapping issues with bluebirds going in them last year. I would watch and release right away.....and they would go right back to the trap within 30 minutes. This was kind of frustrating, because I always keep several bluebird boxes available in my yard for bluebirds to nest in. Aaron Perkins is now working with Floyd Van Ert to help run things. They are always very helpful with answering questions.

Just curious.....did you end up painting or staining your trap boxes? I ended up staining mine because I did notice some minor weathering of the wood for the 3 months that I kept them up!!

I painted mine Bright White & add a fresh coat of paint every year.

Once I painted it the Starlings seem like they preferred it even more.
