When one is younger many of these challenges are just that - challenges. Kind of fun to plan and deal with. As one gets to be older though, as I am now, and have some physical challenges these can become more of a worry and upsetting. Manufacturers of housing need to stay current and try to avoid as many of these worries as possible. Also, sometimes younger people can help out their older landlords - if needed.taxidermy lady wrote:I second that Carlton! Modifications are no good if it's not done exact! I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.
At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.
At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.

Carlton,
Anyone who is willing to take on purple martin landlording is not old.
Your critical thinking and logic is not indicative of someone who is old in mind and soul.
I agree that we need younger landlords who can help and learn from older landlords. Wisdom and experience in this endeavor needs to be passed on for the health and well being of the purple martins.
I learned so many valuable lessons in landlording from my father and grandfather. I am currently instilling the passion into my children.
Mark.

Okie,
Good to hear you and Mark are going to work together on making the modification. I haven't started on my garden. Right now I'm trying to get my martins through 5 days of 40 degree weather with supplemental feeding.
Hope your martins return and the starlings go away.

Thanks for your interest. If my ASY male does not make it back for some reason, I am really banking on attracting some of the SYs from some of the small colonies close to me. That means it will be probably the end of April.
Weather this year is wild roller coaster ride. Feeling for the eastern US this week. Good luck with your feeding.
Got my cool season veggies in & they are growing like weeds. Warm season ones on porch so I can keep an eye out for PM in the back yard.
And watch 3 starlings who are attracted to the Trio. I sure wish I could shoot. They are lined up on the line in front of my house. It would make fun pickins until the neighbors call the cops.
Be safe.

OMG is right! Have been battling starlings for a few days since I modified my neighbors house next door and added Crescent openings. I only have Troyer Vertical and Horizontal Gourds all with Connelly II so didn't think a thing about it. YIKES! Have one coming and going out of a gourd now.
Mark -- you said in the past you did the modifications for folks -- would you consider doing it for me? I have 28 gourds. Or can you tell me exactly what to do so I can relay to my husband. I understand the wing guard you can get from PMCA but it's the floors that I'm confused about. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have some $ but not skills -- will gladly pay you for your time and effort!
In the interim if I close the gourd he is using will is just make him move to another gourd. I only have 4 left and the SY's haven't arrived yet hear in Canyon Lake, Texas. I'm afraid he'll go after one of the pairs already using a gourd.
I'm just panicked!

Jacquie, if you have a trap for your gourds, maybe you can get that one starling that's getting in. https://www.purplemartin.org/shop/produ ... nnel-trap/

Hi,
I do have the traps and was planning to try that today! I'm hopeful, but there are now three coming around, though I've only seen the one enter gourd 18. Feel like I need to make the modification for peace of mind even if I get lucky with the trap (the PMCA person I talked with said starlings won't usually enter if they see something blocking their path. So maybe that's a win/win except I don't want him to fight with a pair over another gourd that is not set with a trap... am I making sense?
Thanks for suggestion!

Jacque. Do you have the closures for the Troyers? I have all my gourds up but all but the 2 I can see are closed up with traps in those 2. So there are only 2 any starling can attempt.
Good luck with S&S control. There are many kinds of traps for them. I have all but the V trap. From the threads on the effectiveness of the V trap I may consider it. Not fond of having to go in & catch them though.
Right now S&S are not actively seeking nesting sites so I only trap an occasional one. In the next few weeks that will likely change.

Jacquie,
My advice is don't panic. You have 28 gourds, so your martins will have plenty of room, Martins will usually not enter a gourd inhabited by a starling. In My experience starling become a real problem when they compete with martins for a nest site.It is difficult to trap starlings until they build a nest.
I hope Mark can help you. There are some good photos of my modification in this thread. Look in the above tips for 2016 season for " Lewis Modification, Wing Guards Help Stop Starlings". There are some good photos that should help your husband understand how to make the modification. Cut the plastic sheet to fit the porch and place the wing guard over the Conley II entrance so it touches the plastic sheet. Secure both the wing guard and plastic sheet with SS steal wood screws. You can get the wing guards(WEP) and screws from PMCA. Ask for extra screws. The only problem is trying to find 1/8 in. plastic sheeting. You also need to sand a groove to match the dip in the Conley II. See photos.Maybe Mark can help you get the plastic sheeting.

I just saw the new posts to this topic.
Finding 1/8" sheet in a reasonable size and price is the challenge. As Lewis has discovered, high density polyethylene (HDPE) is the best material.
Grainger was my source. I ordered it and had it delivered to my address rather than picking it up at the store.
1/8" HDPE is available from FarmTek online as PolyMax Board 1/8" x 48" x 96" @ $55 plus shipping. That is actually the best price for the size.
HDPE cuts and drills easily and it holds up to UV exposure. Table saw for the long cuts and miter saw or radial arm saw to cut the short cuts. Drill press to drill the holes.
I looked up 1/8" Lexan polycarbonate sheet from a home improvement store but it is more than three times as expensive, is harder to work with and I don't know how well it holds up to UV exposure.
PVC sheet deteriorates after several seasons unless it is painted with a protective paint against UV light.
Others have mentioned the use of corrugated plastic for the porch elevators but it is thicker and I have not tried it in this application. I know that Lewis' original recommendation of 1/8" sheet for porch elevators works perfectly. No disrespect to anyone willing to experiment with the thicker corrugated plastic.

Thank you Mark! I'll get hubby on it! We don't have a table saw but hopefully he can figure something out...
Sorry to hear that Okey. I have the Excluder IIs, which I modified a little, and so far, after 6 years, not one starling has managed to get in. However, this year, 2017, March 24, and still not a PM in sight! I had 5 nests last season, have never missed in many years, but so far, NOTHING. I've never waited this late before, I live in the western tip of Kentucky. I see reports way farther north than me, but I'll just keep waiting. Larry in Kentucky

I have Excluders too in the Trio. My returning ASY male last year had a learning curve to learn it's negotiation but his female zipped right in. Funny how you can identify what entrances they are used to.
Right now you & I are waiting in the same boat. Still have not seen a single PM. 3 more days to anniversary of last years return.
I have read the flying rats start looking for nesting spots just before martins return. Have not seen that happen. I'm only trapping an occasional starling & a rare sparrow. I think they are just curious to look at a spot, not a burning desire to "get it done".
Keep us posted. We will celebrate with you. And same here.
Good luck

Okie,
Any more action at your site?
I just read that the musical, "Oklahoma", by Rodgers and Hammerstein was set in Oklahoma Territory outside of Claremore in 1906.
If the background landscape in pictures of Will Rogers Tomb reflects the general area, then it is beautiful in and around Claremore, OK.

Okie I would also recommend a do not panic approach! Have you witnessed more than one starling breach of Conley II? You may want to consider keeping more entrances open to determine whether starling breach was more of an isolated instance as opposed to regular occurrence. I know you're down there in "skinny" starling territory so maybe you've witnessed enough breaches to cause for alarm and sorry if I missed that somewhere in this thread!

Only that one breach. Maybe just a fluke but it took me by surprise. Good point TimG. Again I think it was the shock of not expecting that. No worry, I'm just a trapp'n fool. My best friend thinks I'm horrible for killing birds. She has a ton of the natives at her feeders but no rats. I'm the opposite.
Caught another starling in a Van Ert trap and a male sp in Trio NBT today. Have not put the Blaine out again but will after this line of storms pass through. Just a trickle of birds checking out cavities so far the big nesting fever has not yet begun. Wish it would start before the Martin's get here so as to eliminate as many as possible without having to worry about not trapping a Martin.
Mark, our Master Gardener Teaching Gardens are across the street from WILL Rogers Memorial in Claremore & yes it is nice country if you can tolerate the summer heat. If ever in the area that memorial is worth touring. Also his home over looking the lake.
