Six years ago, we started a banding project here with my purple martin colony. Little did I know at that time, those little yellow bands would bring a message of hope and inspiration to me for the 2017 season. I am currently at my average number of pairs for this time of year (71 pairs) and some old friends have returned.

- Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

As I said on the blog post, it's nice to know that good things come from a devastating time. Seeing those martins prevail after a year with owl attacks and then return to your site is a special gift. Thank you for sharing your story.

The best we could figure out was it was the lightning storms we had and it must have been a stray bolt that went through the cage. I've never had the problem again. It was very weird, wasn't it? And what were the odds?
Nevertheless, I check my cages every day now and haven't had it reoccur.
