I really enjoyed the new video on banding! You pointed out the youngest baby. How can you tell? I'm sure there's a way but they all look the same to me!

Joe,
I noticed the crescent appears to have been enlarged on the camera equipped gourd?

Martin Colony History: Mom n Dad had a plastic 12 unit martin house with some martins as long as I can remember. In 2013 they had 1 pair. I don't think they fledged any. I then started learning how to take care of martins and in 2014 we took that house down and put up a Troyer 18 gourd rack. We had 7 pair with 28 fledged. That summer I built a T-14 (I was only 12). I was also given 4 natural gourds that I hung beneath the T-14. In 2015, we had 23 pair although only 22 pair fledged young. They fledged 88 young. In 2016, we had 36 pair, 210 eggs, 163 hatched, 149 fledge!! One pair fledged 2 broods. In 2017, I had 36 pair with 35 fledging young. They laid 204 eggs, hatched 155, and fledged 152.

They say that they plan to put a geolocater on one of the parents. I'm guessing that's why they enlarged the entrance.

Thanks Marcus.
That makes sense.

Yep. That's enlarged from the GPS that we put on one of the camera parents last year. The GPS units make it too difficult for them to enter the nest without expanding the hole.

We're planning on trapping one of the parents early next week to deploy our last unit.

BioJoe, did any of the nestlings from last years nest cam return?

Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.

Really enjoyed the banding video.

No doubt I'm overlooking it somewhere, but would someone refresh my memory of the projected fledge date? Maybe somewhere between

July 21- 27?

When do the PMCA folks think Junior and his siblings might actually try out their wings?

I'm a newbie first-year landlord (4th year trying) and am learning from my own PMs that "leaving" the nest is not clear-cut. Unlike Robins, PMs apparently don't jump out one day and that's it. I've seen everything from heads poking way out, to standing on the porch, to nearly falling off the porch - wings flapping . . . and then going back in the gourd.

Thanks.

As I watch this it makes me wonderhow many females!
One has a bee on its fleshy part of beak! Others trying to get it off!
They should fledge by Sunday! Mine took 29 days and within an hour they were all fledged!

Six of my 13 babies just finished Day #29 and if anyone has been in the air, I've not seen it.

I'm not anxious, e.g., this morning all the adults were gone for a long time, maybe two hours and the silence was depressing.

I think it's close to the eye but not on it! The others have tried to get it off! They may not be able to lower the house with fledging close!

Yesterday morning's rescue operation was a success. The nestling had a carpenter ant clamped on its beak. This happened in last year's camera nest as well...must not be that uncommon.

Fledging is projected to start tomorrow, but they sure look ready to go today! Make sure to check in on the cam. Maybe you'll see someone's big moment?!

Looks like only 5 of them have returned so far and it is starting to get dark out. Hopefully number 6 is OK and just late getting back in, seems unlikely he would be sleeping elsewhere the firs night out of the nest.

Only five so far tonight too. I'm sure it is not uncommon to lose one after they first fledge but it is still sad :-(.

Oh good. Just looked and saw six too. Hopefully it is the other baby. It's sitting in the entrance.

I noticed this is your first year to have martins. Congratulations. I have no doubt you'll have more next season. We started with one pair too and the next year had several more. Once the word gets out . I sure miss them when they leave but when July comes in TX I do want them to be well on their way. We had two late nests this year and the temps were 100-101 with a heat index of 107-108 for several days. We checked those babies every day because parents abandoned a nest of four in July last year and we didn't know it for two days. We lost all but one to the heat by the time we discovered they were orphans.
The parents this year were very good and stuck with the babies during the heat. They all fledged at about 27 days old on July 8 and only came back one night after. It was such a relief to know they made it.

I know you're already looking forward to next year

Thanks Sharon, I am so excited for next year! I am happy your babies made it through the heat. Mine fledged July 7 before the heat! It is really a different scene when they leave, I felt lost! I'm planning for next year already when the heat comes! Good luck with yours next year!
