Last evening there were four martins in the air at the airport roost. They came in with a small group of starlings and were later seen flying around with a couple of chimney swifts. I never saw the martins land in the trees that have been used for roosting over the past two and a half months, so not sure where they actually spent the night. This is only the second time since the late 1980's that I have seen martins still around the roost site in October. Their vocalizations were those of juvenile birds. There was also a small group of migrating scissor-tailed flycatchers in the trees next to the parking garage.

Martin Colony History: Hosting martins for about 5-6 years, keeping records back to 2014. Using all gourds-horizonal Troyers and Excluders
2018 33 pair, 140 fledged
2017-25 pair, 106 fledged
2016 25 pair, 87 fledged
2015 24 pair, 70 fledged
2014 21 pair, 43 fledged

How late are martins in the United States. Saw many chimney swifts circling high overhead. Heard their voices and then saw them. I thought they were gone also. Maybe they were passing through.

For 2020 I will be offering: 1 Gemini rack with 12 Troyer Horizontal and 12 Troyer Vertical gourds, 1 Multi-Purpose pole with 2 Trio M12K houses with expanded compartments and 4 S&K Bo 11 Plus gourds with clinger tunnels, 1 Multi-Purpose pole with 2 Trio Mini-Castles with expanded compartments and 4 Troyer Vertical Gourds underneath, 1 MPP pole with 2 Trio MSS12 houses with expanded compartments, 3 Super gourds and 1 Excluder gourd underneath, 1 Fountain Gourd rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds, 1 AAA16 rack with 8 Troyer Horizontal and 8 Troyer Vertical gourds, 1 rack with 3 S&K Double Gourds, 1 Trendsetter 16 house with 4 Troyer Vertical Gourds underneath and 1 S&K Barn style house with expanded compartments and 2 gourds underneath. This will be a total of 127 nesting cavities offered for 2020. Hopefully this will help to increase my numbers over 2019 which were 60 active pair that fledged 274 babies.

That is great news Dick. Hopefully the majority have made the migration down to south america.

thanks,
Anita Harp

From things I have read over the years, there may be martins along the Gulf coast until well into November. There is the jumbo roost in New Orleans that as it winds down could still have some birds very late. There may not be much of a gap between when the last birds going south leave and when the first few birds coming north arrive. There are martins in migration almost continuously throughout the year because their range covers such a large area.

Chimney swifts in our area seem to be about a month behind the martins when they arrive in the Spring, and are usually still seen until mid-October. There are some chimneys on buildings downtown that seem to be stopover roosts. There can be hundreds if not thousands of them dropping into the chimneys right before dark. It is quite a sight.
