I know they've been discussed on here before, but I couldn't remember. Is there a member on the forum that works at Epcot or helps with those colonies? I was there last week and obviously the martins are all gone but I was surprised to see the predator guards they use. They appear to be aluminum and are have a good diameter (looked like 18-24 inches, maybe more). However they sit directly on the ground and are only 18-24 inches tall. I would assume they don't have a lot of problems with raccoons etc. in the park but I can't see the guards they use stopping any predator.

Maybe they were just lowered for the off season. It seems to me they would hang from the stop pin?
They have some big snakes down there that could easily bypass the guard if it stays on the ground.

The large cylindrical thingies at the base of the pole, I'm pretty sure stay there at ground level.
I believe it's main purpose to keep the winch hardware from being tampered with and/or vandalized.

Anyone ever been there during martin season? Curious how many pair they have, I noticed in the pictures I saw at some point they had T14's and now more gourd racks.

My brother used to work for Disney as a Photo Pass photographer. He took several nice pictures of the Epcot Gourd racks about three years ago... Thought I had shared them some where, must have been on the Bat House forum which is down at the moment. (Virus, and Joe is very busy with real life plus his web host is giving him the run around)

- Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.
You can see what looks like stop pins up about 6' to 8'. Maybe the big guards stay on the ground (for winch protection, as mentioned), but they bring out attachable guards during PM season and/or if natural predators are encountered?
