The users in question have originally registered with their state as part of their username.
In my case I was able to change my user name, but that was several years ago before the fairly recent website upgrade. Apparently changing is no longer an option. -- John

Martin Colony History: 9 years of trying hard...finally in 2017 I had 3 pair w/ 11 babies. T-14 +4 w/ 4 Troyer horiz. gourds. Troyer Super System 24. Fast forward to 2020... 64 fledged.

John & Linda seem to have the fix but it has to be done each time you start a new topic i.e. put your location in the subject line each time you post a new topic. IMO this would be good for all of us to start doing particularly if the post is geography sensitive information. e.g. "first subbie of the year". I think the only way to have location to show automatically would be to re-register as a new user. I was prepared to do this but that wasn't even allowed since my email was still in use by my previous profile. Old profiles never die....
Thanks Joe for the info.

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

If you go back & read you will see that BioJoe (PMCA) did respond to this topic. My reply explained how your state can show in your user name, but you will have to re-register to do it. If you re-register (change user name & password) you will most likely lose all past postings & scout reports.

When the new site was put up we all had to re-register, that's when some changed their user name to include their state.

Some of the old timers here may remember that this forum was started many years ago by a guy named "Danny". It was called Danny's Purple Martins. He eventually turned it over to the PMCA. They took it from there adding all the info, articles, links, etc.

A user cannot change their username, however they can add their city/state/county in the Location box which is displayed off to the side on each post. As both William Bagwell and paulie have said you can edit this location by logging in to the Forum, clicking on your username and selecting Profile. Once you are in your profile you can select "Edit profile" and from there edit your location, interests and signature. All of these fields are displayed on each post you make.

The best way to indicate your state would be to add that information to the topic heading when posting. You can also modify the topic heading after it's been posted (if you are the user who created the topic). That way you can choose when to display that information; "Bad weather, late arrivals" could use a state or general area to be more helpful while "How to modify Trio housing" is more generic and does not require a location.

BioJoe & Toy in PA -- I did read your replies, but did not recognize either of you as purplemartin.org employees or as forum administrators. From the thread I think there are several others that felt the same. Now that we have a reply under the forum administrator user name this thread should be complete. -- John

It is actually a fairly simple thing to modify phpBB to display the user's location information next to the topic title or next to the topic starter's username. I've been doing things like that for many years. However it does create a little headache when upgrading the forum software because you may have to re-apply the modification each time. Not hard, but those little details add up.

Forum Admin's solution is actually a good one if we can remember to add our state to the topic title when appropriate.
