Martin Colony History: 2016 First Yr.

Lots of nest builing going on in central Ohio, Trees barely have any leaves and they are plucking off what they can find. Fun morning to watch

That's good. I have 3-4 ASY "pairs" right now but they haven't started nest building yet. They are still pairing up and picking cavities. A couple of the males have been here for several weeks and the females just started rolling in the last week or so. Won't be long for nesting and then the SY's will be here to cause a ruckus... :grin:

Martin Colony History: 2017 first year

Nest building here as well left a few piles of pine needles close by saw a few martins on the ground pulling dead grass carrying up to houses.

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Green leaves started going in this morning at my site. Not many of them around on trees yet though. Their favorite is birch but none quite there as of today but they got the seed pods on them.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

2017- built T-14+songbird magnet, 6 pairs,15 fledged
2018- built 2nd T-14. Anxiously waiting!!

Lots of nesting here, no green leaves yet. Last year the prefered material was corn fodder this year its soybean stubble and some rye straw that I spread on some yard seeding this spring. As of now I think Ive got 12 pairs.

Wow.. Went to check my Satilite Site this morning and the Martins were still there.. They took three of the four Troyer Horizontal Gourds with ConleyII entrance.. Watch two different pair taking stick and grass in the gourds. Also I think I have a pair in one of the trio houses.. i know the season is still young for a new site like this, but I’m hopeful there will be a few more when the Subbies arrive.. I did a nest check today and have 16 well built nests with leaves in but no eggs yet....believe by this weekend we'll have our first eggs
