Can someone tell me again how to post a photo here? Okay Grandpa, we'll try.
I gave up a decade ago and was putting my photos on photo bucket, with a link. Then Photo bucket started charging for an account.
Steve Kroenke doesn't have a problem...of course I think he has an IT background.
Thanks in advance.

I use vgy.me
Go to that site and upload your photos. It's just like photobucket but free.
Then click on a new post on this site, and click on "img" tab above paste the link to your image from the vgy site and it should work here.
Once you upload a picture at vgy.me it will show you the direct link to the photo. Just copy it then and come back here and post it with "img" tab used.

If you don't want to use another website find the picture you want to upload and then right click on it. You should be able to "open with" microsoft paint. Depending on what version of Windows you have you can right click and just hit "edit" and it will open in Paint. Once paint is open of the options at the top of the screen under the home tab is "resize". You will be given the option to resize by percentage or by pixels. Resize the picture by pixes and just change the numbers to 300. Once both numbers are 300 or below you can save the picture and then upload it, once it is the smaller size you can just upload it via the up loader in the forum.
I just found a short youtube video that shows exactly how I do mine.

Glory be. this seemed to work. Set pixels at 900 and got file size down to near 250 kb. (maybe what size you set the pixels depends on size of original; I got too small at first). Anyway, photo is from this morning at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, Collinsville IL., (metro St. Louis east). Still about six nests to fledge, not sure how many pixels - ha. Many thanks to flyin-lowe for photo help, and others here.

Maybe we can get a sticky thread with clear direcections. It seems to be a very common problem, people not understanding why their pictures won't post.

You might not have, I'm surprised Johns posted if he only lowered it to 900. I was thinking it couldn't be over 300 or 400. I'm sure someone from the PMCA can explain the exact guidelines.

John,
No IT background here! I know just enough to get by at times and that doesn't always work out!
I use Photobucket and that seems to work most of the time. In order to share photos using the "img" protocol, Photobucket now requires a paid subscription. So I pay a small amount each month. There is a free account to store photos I believe.
I wish the Forum had a system similar to Facebook where photos can be transferred from your computer directly to Facebook and posted. It is a simple system.

Whether or not an image is displayed as a picture within the post, or if it displayed as a link, depends on the dimensions of the image. If your image width or height is larger than 1024 pixels, then it will be displayed as a link. Anything smaller should show up as an image within the post.
The overall file size should be under 500KB. If you upload an image larger than 500KB it will not post. Most computers should come with software needed to resize an image, or there are online sites that can resize the image for you like http://resizeimage.net
Like Steve mentioned, you can also use an online account like Photobucket (there is a free option for up to 250 images) to store images and use the Img button to display the pictures.
We'll work up a Sticky post with step-by-step screenshots as well, but to add a photo to an existing post, or to a new topic, scroll down to the the bottom of the post, underneath the Save draft/Preview/Submit buttons, and click on the tab that says Attachments. Click on 'Add files' and it should open a window to your computer files where you can find the image you would like to upload. Select the image and hit 'Open'.
When you click on the Preview button you should see the filename located in the attachments below the post and it will show up as either an image, or a link (depending on how large the image is) in the post.
