We live on a lake and the Poles for the Martins are 5' from the water. The adults always have the fledglings 1st flight over the water. Remarkably most of the time they fly perfect the 1st time.

I have waded out in the lake and dipped up a couple with a dip net.

A pool will not provide enough room for the adults to skim and get water.

I have an 18x33 pool less then 100 feet from my martin housing and zero issues. Last year some of the TS would fly over the pool and drop the poop sack from their babies in the pool but none have done it this year. I have at night seen bats drop and drink from the pool. I also read years ago about a study that a college was doing concerning bats using swimming pools.

... Our pool is an in ground pool. It's about 200 feet away for the Martins. Our house is two stories high, so the Martins can't see us at the pool. It was not put that way by design , it just turned out that way.. Have not seen any Martins drink for the pool...

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

My Martin housing is right around my pool and patio. Within 30ft. Very little poop and very few bugs in the pool.

They drink from the pool and like to watch us swim.

Doug
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

I have a 30x14 semi-in-ground pool about 25 ft from my T-14. The pool deck is about 4' off the ground. So we can actually get fairly close to the house. Our presence does not disturb the birds, though sometime they will fly off when we walk by the house. They don't drink from the pool, but we have almost zero flying bugs. There are often 15-25 PMs on the house while we enjoy the pool, so I'd say it's definitely not an issue.
