Sparrow trapping tip
I just wanted to share with everyone my method for trapping HOSP. Last season I was having trouble getting them to go to my trap so I took the trap to them. I have an S&K BO9 gourd that has been converted into a permanent trap with an 1.5" round entrance hole. When I see a nest being built in one of my S&K gourds I would lower my rack and swap that gourd out to the trap gourd. I would move their nest material over as well and raise the rack back up. Within 20 minutes bam! Usually always catch the male first. I would then lower and slip a plastic shopping bag up onto the gourd slip the lid off and they fly into the bag ready to be taken care of.

2015 - three males attempted attracting a mate 1 ASY and 2 SY
2016 - became a landlord with 14 pair

I took a BO9 S&K gourd and cut the front wall out following the groove in the plastic and replaced the front wall with a new sheet of plastic that has a new entrance hole that is only 1.5" in diameter so a purple martin could not enter and the HOSP can.
The trapping mechanism is similar to the way a "Spare-o-door" trap works. When the HOSP enters through the entrance hole they step on a wire that causes a door to fall and close the entrance behind them. When I transfer the newly started nest from the one and into the trap gourd it utilize it to help disguise the trip wire. It doesn't take too long for them to go in to check things out and then it's all over.

How long does one wait to trap sparrows once they first start building a nest in a house compartment. ? Immediately, wait a day or two, once nest built ?
