Martin Colony History: New - just set out gourds today, May 4th, 2017. We had several purple Martins looking over the place this morning then left in the afternoon. Why?

I am a new landlord in Naples Fl. I have a predator quart in place.
We have a lot of snakes so I bought bird netting.
I have no idea how to put it up.
I saw a picture saying it should be fluffed up and close to the square pole but how the heck do you get it to stay up

Lois,

I explained my method in a reply to another person in my post about the mountain of bird netting. I included a photo of one of my net traps. A simple way is to zip tie a bunch of 3/4 inch bird netting to the pole just above your pole guard. Just have the netting spread out over the top of your pole so that any large rat snake that defeats your guard would then weave through the netting and get caught. The netting needs to fluff out as much as possible and not lay flat on your guard. If it is flat, then a snake may be able to crawl over it.

Yes, southwest Florida has many rat snakes! I lived in north Florida for many years and my yard was infested with rat snakes. My net traps saved my martins many times.

LoisG,

You have to use very small wire to tie it up as you wrap it around the pole. Be sure to wrap the bird netting “loosely” so the snake has a chance to get entangled in the netting. I’m thinking that wire size is something like .030. Like bailing twine wire or even smaller. I use 3/4” bird netting and have been very successful. I also use a 24” Aluminum cylinder Predator guard up above the winch on every pole.

Hi Lois, there are many methods to hang netting. I use flat 1 inch wide aluminum arms to hang mine. Hope the photos will help you.
