Hi all,
I’m new to this forum. Well again. I’ve been gone so long they took me off the register! I had to sign up all over again. Hopefully Some of the older members will remember me 😉 Maybe!
I’ve been at my new location since 2016 and still no martins. Had a few lookie loos the past 2 summers but no takers.
Things may be looking up this spring as I have an adult male VERY interested, and he’s managed to find a sub female that seems to be unattached. This is the earliest I had interest since I’ve been here.
My mentor that lived around the corner got dementia and his wife moved them to the coast. She left his house’s for the new owner, and he kept getting his birds every year until I went by there a few weeks ago and the houses were gone.
She gave me one of his house which I put up last summer and wouldn’t you know it, THATS the one that all the interest is in!
Believe it or not, I have looked in from time to time, but with no computer anymore, it’s tough for me to post and keep up on this phone. It just seems to take FOREVER to post something.
This post has taken a week and a half! 😂

Martin Colony History: Visitors are rare. On the northern edge of the martins range.

I remember your story of getting Martins after years of trying. It gave me hope. Hoping you get back on the board this year. Sounds like you have a good shot now.


Year 10 for me, hopping for a breakthrough.
2010- 1 SY male on and off for a couple weeks
'11- 0 visits
12- 0 visits
13- 0 visits
14- 1 SY male stopped by over 2 weeks.
15- 0 visits
16- 0 visits
17- 0 visits
18- 0 visits
19- Break-through year. Had a SY Male stop in on June 7th and stay all day, every day until end of June
20 - The male didn't return. I did see a SY male do a few flyovers.
21- a couple brief visits
22-3rd rack added, all within a mile. This one at prime location, 0 visits
23- 0 visits

Good to hear from you again gobbler it’s been quite a long time I wondered what happened to you. Sounds like you’re going to get birds this year good luck to you.Ed.

Nice to hear from you both.
Just so happens this might be my year here. I posted on here earlier today and tonight of my fifth year, my first pair decided to stay the night!
So tomorrow could be a real bright day for me during these dark times. I can say they’re early arrival has brought a lot of joy this year, and I’m thankful!
Sure makes staying home a whole lot more fun :wink: Image

Martin Colony History: 85 pair in 2020. Seems fairly consistent the last few years.

Hello Gobbler, been missing you on this forum. I bet you have been missing those Martin's also. Sure hope this is the year the tide changes for you. Keith

Martin Colony History: six pair in 2014, have grown to 52 pairs in 2017.

How could I forget Gobler T. You probably don't remember me, as I didn't post much, as I was just getting started. But I do remember cheering for you along the way. Nice to see your post and that you have martins again.
2011- first year trying, a few visitors.
2012-One ASY pair, raised two young, lots of subby visitors. So thankfull.
2013-daily subby visits.
2014-Six SY pairs
2015-18 pair, 83 fledglings
2016-36 pair, 147 fledglings
2017-52 pairs, 192 fledglings.
2018-60 pair, 246 fledglings.
2019-59 pair, 238 fledglings.
2020-62 pair.
2021-65 pair.
2022-63 pair.
2023-60 pair
2024-62 pair

Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

Gobs.. I mentioned your name just a few days ago when I made my first post after a 5 or 6 year hiatus. Prior to that I was in Slidell La developing a colony.. had a couple of pairs going, then we moved to a new town. My new site was even better.. 0 trees, plenty of power lines behind our house.. 2 awesome ponds within 100 yards. Zero HS and Starling issues.. beautiful gourds.. and it took me 6 years to get martins..go figure. lol.. but they came with a vengeance.. I've got 3, maybe 4 pairs. All the females except on are SYs.. the males are all ASY. It's amazing. Seems like every week I have more and more swirling around.

It'll happen to you sooner or later. I remember all the trouble you were having around 2009 2010 2011 2012 and maybe later.. didn't you finally get a few to stay? And it sounds like you've moved after?

Nice to hear from you. I’ve missed my time on here too. Thanks for the well wishes. Looks like my wait may be over.

Archer, I remember you, looks like from your profile you’ve done real well! Keep raising those numbers.

David, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that’s been missing on here for a while! I did get started at my original site, had Martins for two years, then up and moved! Took me seven years the first time, and I’m starting the 5th year here. If things progress as I expect them to, my wait is done. This pair will put me back in the game.

Good to hear from y’all. Hope you fill up this year!

Martin Colony History: 2017 Had a lot visitors no Matins nesting, hoping 2018 will be different.
2018 Had 1 pair
2019 had 30 pair

Tony I remember you. You came by my house in South Fl when I lived there. I have moved to NC and here now.

Hey James,
I figured you would remember me :wink: nice to hear from you.
I was thinking about you the other day. I had your house down working on it (thanks again) The perch had gotten loose and would flop from side to side when a bird would land. I’ve got it good and stable now though.
How are you liking NC? I’m guessing you have a colony there now.
I still can’t believe you left south Florida! I guess it’s not for everyone.
If I could afford it, you couldn’t blast me out of there!
