I posted yesterday about my SY activity, but that I hadn't seen them enter a gourd yet. That changed this morning. The SY peaked into several gourds before finally completely entering one. It stayed about a minute and came back out. I don't know if its a male or female. I have had 2 SY's circling today, but only one landed and entered a gourd while the other continues circling. Still, none are spending the night and yes I stayed out there and watched. I wonder where they spend the night? I guess spending the night will be the next "baby step" forward in this process. Oh by the way, I have seen no aggression towards my decoys as others have stated witnessing. I believe the decoys did draw them in for a closer look. Can anyone identify the gender in these pics?

The same things are happening to me. I had a sub adult male circle around my housing many times, he was very vocal when he approached. He landed on the porch of my gourds and he stuck his head in the gourd many times. Then he entered the gourd part way, eventually he went into at least two gourds. He circled around many times chirping, landing on the porch of the gourds and he would sit there for awhile looking around. He left yesterday afternoon and I have not seen him since. I have my Bird-X speaker on constantly during daylight. I am torn between he seemed spooked and unsure if it was safe and maybe he was looking for the other birds (on the speaker). A similar scenario happened to me last year :-(

If they don’t attract a mate they will eventually leave. Your better off getting an asy next year they always bring the females back.

The bird in your photos is a SY-M. I can see his speckles on the crissum and on the side of his chest, as well as on the throat.
