I have a few Super Gourds that still need vent elbows inserted.

What is the best brand and type of caulk to use for this task? Thanks for any info you can share.

Hi Caroline,
Either lexel or fast drying DAP with silicone. Either one will work ok for you. Iv used it on supergourds, excluders, and natural gourds, works good. If you have OCD and need that perfect look, apply the sealant, get your finger wet and run it over the bead to smooth it down.

Ps unk bond has a good question, if you feel the need to vent the cap, may have to rough up the cap surface around the vent hole before applying the dap. It will last a season but tends to peel up in my experience, I have a few iv vented, rarely open the vents but keep them for the bigger gourds.

Two SuperGourd poles (12 gourds on each) at River Point Assisted Living Center.

Here is another option. I used a one inch PVC elbow and installed them at the top back of my SuperGourds. They are as high on the neck as possible but still allow the open end of the elbow to face down.

I drilled the hole with a 7/8 inch paddle then filed the hole a little until it would accept the screw end of the elbow. Once the threads grabbed, it was easy to screw the elbow in until it was flush with the gourd exterior. I choose an elbow that was threaded on one end and smooth on the other.

The elbows are watertight and no caulking was needed.

I did it this too, bought a wood file that was rounded on one side and flat on the other.

It was easy to make the hole a little larger to start the threads.
