2021 Texas deep freeze, first arrived 4/6. 37 pair, 143 hatched, 140 fledged, 21 non viable.
2020 first arrived 3/27. 21 pair, 92 fledged, 9 non viable.
2019 first time with Martin's, first arrived 4/24 10 pair, 24 fledged, 15 eggs non-viable.
I was just working outside and I noticed that Martin flying a little low and landed in my pool cover. I went over, helped it out, noticed it's a second year, first one I've seen this season. It flew from my hand about 150 ft into some bushes and then fell onto the ground. I went over and picked it up again and figured it was probably hungry due to the cold weather we've been recently getting in Northern indiana. I was going to try to give it some water and food, so I put some mealworms in front of it and about 30 seconds after I took this picture it died in my hand..
It had its eyes closed and then all of a sudden opened its eyes stretched its wings out really wide went forward on its feet and stretched its toes and then just died.

That hurts! We can only try............
I have been worried also here in Ohio. 3rd day in the upper 40's and all they do is puff out and sit on the rack. I've been flicking crickets every day and all they would do is flinch if it hit a gourd.
I tried again this morning and nothing. Went out around three and one took it and then they all started. Can't tell you the relief I'm feeling with 2 more days of 40's in the forecast. I bought a bed and breakfast pole and hope they take to eating from it.

There is always a couple adults hanging around throughout the day with most returning at late evening. They all look healthy, so I know they're finding food. I think this second year was a little too soon and inexperienced. Maybe the shock of me picking it up didn't help, but on the pool cover in water was not going to end well either.
Just never had one pass on my hands before. It was a weird feeling and oddly bothered me more then expected with it being so young and seeing it panic the way it did as it passed. I know there is nothing I could have done but will always wish there was.

So sorry. You did all you could. He really looks healthy in the picture. Beautiful plumage, and appears to be "plump" and not underfed. Thanks for trying.
