These two have been constantly here for a week now. I'm thinking sub adult male and asy female? At times I have 3 hanging out. They are in/out of all 6 gourds but have not picked one yet. The male has been here longer so it make me wonder if she needs to rest and fatten up after migration. Is it normal to not be making a nest yet?

looks like two sub males to me but I'm not the best at identifying visually. I'm more about sounds and the actions of the SY-M's as it's easier imo. I think you're going to begin your colony this year. Good luck and great photo's.

It’s hard to tell with the shadows on their heads but Looks like 2 SY males as both of these birds head feathers appear to be completely purple.. or is that a silhouette effect..? As Jones said you can identify by their chirping.. if they do the series of fast “click” sounds after a singing phrase, then they’re males..
Good luck

- Martin Colony History: 2020 - 1 pair SY, 4 eggs, hatched and fledged only 1 due to a lone male SY that carried some of the eggs out of the nest.
2021 - 2 pair SY, fledged 7, 2 lone male SY
2022- 2 pair ASY, 3 pair SY, 22 eggs laid, hatched 19, fledged 16. Also one pair SY that nested but did not lay eggs.
2023- 13 pair, 60 eggs, fledged 47.
2024- 21 pair, 94 eggs, fledged 75.
One of the easiest visual identifiers for me is the females will have a light gray/whiteish area on their forehead right above their eyes. The SY males normally have a darker/purple forehead. With a good pair of binoculars there is a noticeable difference as long as they are holding still.

*2025 - 200 pairs, 795/953 eggs hatched, 739 fledged - 200 young banded
Based on what I can tell from the pics, it looks more than likely you have 2 SY males. SY females typically have nearly all white under covert tail feathers, with perhaps a narrow darker line on the main shaft of those feathers. The tail coverts of these two appear to have too much dark color....maybe one could be an ASY female, hard to tell for sure with the shadowed pictures. Hopefully they attract more martins to your site and eventually pair up and begin to nest.
Good luck!!

Thanks for this insight...observing this morning several SY pairs with full morning sun views, I believe you are correct and this is very helpful.millerjr88 wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2023 12:30 pmOne of the easiest visual identifiers for me is the females will have a light gray/whiteish area on their forehead right above their eyes. Looks like it's a pair. She has been busy the last few days. Hoping to see some eggs soon.

congrats on your first pair. Keep a close eye monitoring and hopefully they will successfully lay and raise a brood of chicks this season...off you go!
