I have heard of it from time to time but this is a first for me. I have an ASY pair building a nest in a gourd I have for TS that is about 100 yards away from my colony. The shephards hook is only 6 foot tall. Every year as the martins return Ill see them land on one of my many TS gourds but have never had them actually build a nest. There are sill cavities open in my colony so they must really like this gourd. It's an old Bo 9... They let me get about 10 feet away from them to snap a pic.

That is very interesting that they didn't take up residence at the colony and chose this gourd. Sometimes I see new things that make me go hmmmm.

Martin Colony History: 2020 - 1 pair SY, 4 eggs, hatched and fledged only 1 due to a lone male SY that carried some of the eggs out of the nest.
2021 - 2 pair SY, fledged 7, 2 lone male SY
2022- 2 pair ASY, 3 pair SY, 22 eggs laid, hatched 19, fledged 16. Also one pair SY that nested but did not lay eggs.
2023- 13 pair, 60 eggs, fledged 47.
2024- 21 pair, 94 eggs, fledged 75.

That's a great picture! I spend a lot of time around my T-14 house and will even talk to the martins, and a lot of them will stay on the house while I mow underneath it. Last week I lowered the house in the afternoon as I like to check all compartments every 3 days. Usually any martins inside will fly out and circle the house until it is raised back up. This time I found an ASY female that stayed in the nesting compartment. She actually let me take her out and hold her in my hand. After putting her back in the compartment, I got worried that maybe she couldn't fly for some reason. So I removed the entire nesting tray so she was out in the open with no restrictions. She just watched me for a little bit before finally flying off. She was back 10 minutes after I raised the house back up and did not seem to be bothered by the experience at all. She and her mate have since built their nest up and currently have it lined with green leaves, so should be seeing eggs soon.
