2026-

Year FIVE is in the books! I took a different role at work this season and just haven't had as much forum time as I would've liked. But.. had to share how things ended up in my part of the world. (still pinching myself to have the privilege of hosting these wonderful birds).

With a slightly older colony now, my birds came back earlier and started nesting earlier. Unfortunately, the weather was sooooo wet this year- followed by a stretch of blazing hot temps. Humidity was the name of the game.

This year's wins:
A first ever full house! 34of 34 apartments occupied, and 117 young fledged. Hubby seems to sense there may be a third pole coming  .

A longer season- the first birds arrived in mid March, almost two weeks ahead of past years.

Snake netting saved the day. We caught a 5' long black rat snake with several nests yet to fledge. HA- gotcha! I did untangle and release him unharmed, but without a belly full of chicks.

Temps were mild- so no need to offer crickets. I tried a couple times and they just looked amused. My freezer is stocked for next year just in case.

Lessons learned:
I need to do nest checks more frequently during the egg-laying period. I work during the week, so weekends are my best opportunity to lower the housing. Even with the prognosticator, a week is sometimes just too long to get accurate data. I'll do better next year PMCA folks!

In my limited years of data collection, hatch rate seemed down. Maybe the cooler and very wet temps were to blame, but I had a couple nests with 5-6 eggs and none hatched.

Those black, spinny gourd vents that have worked so well the past- well, they worked until they didn't. They had trouble with all the blowing rain this year. I ended up with wet nests in the gourds. I will be replacing those before nest year, and based on the collective knowledge here, I will recap the tops and install an elbow design side vent.

Sometimes weird stuff just happens. I posted about it- but one nest had three young dead in the nests with no disturbance. The nest on the same porch had two dead adults inside with no obvious injuries or disease. Forum advice tells my SY may be to blame. Dang SY.

Ideas for 2025:
I plan to retire the barns for next season and replace with another T-14. I know they won't like it, but the plastic tabs are breaking, the lift up doors just aren't as secure as they once were, and it's harder to do efficient nest checks with no nest trays.

Finally- though I didn't post much- I was checking when I could! I love reading how everyone's colonies are doing. And I want to offer the same parting comment as I did last year...... for those still waiting for that first bird. Don't give up. DON'T GIVE UP! This forum is the best- whether searching the archives or posting a new question- I learn something every time I'm on here. Kind, helpful landlords with great ideas and sincere encouragement and full of DIY ingenuity. Most of all- no judgement for drinking the purple kool-aid, we're all in the club.

Isn’t that the truth! My neighbor once asked if I see a doctor because of the attention I give the martins. He said to me not to worry that they’ll be back next year. All I can do is grin. They have no clue. Thanks for sharing Laura. Great season. Time to clean up and prep for next year!!

Congrats on a good season birdiegirl. I have thought of a T14 house. I am still getting around two dozen birds in the eve. All have fledged. I currently have 24 Troyer gourds and 6 chirpy. I am planning on adding at least 6 gourds for next season. Will be sad when they finally head south.

Way to go birdiegirl. A great season. My first full year at present house. S.W Ontario (Essex) Advertised the first week last August with 2 gourd racks. Many visitors then AND certainly paid off come late April. The 1 pair came April 25Th. and from then on a steady introduction. Either its pure luck or the Martin gods were looking upon me. A full house with both racks...24 gourds in the first yr. All fledged successfully and stopping by nightly. Seems so quiet but OHHHH what a season. Cant wait till Spring....will be adding more Gourds for sure

Yay! Thanks for all the replies- it sure is wonderful to be on a forum where we can all share the fun. You all are the BEST.

Here the houses are now empty and that awful quiet has set in... though a mockingbird did fool me with an impressive chortle yesterday. Pretty sure in his little mockingbird mind, he was thinking 'HA! Made you look!"

Martin Colony History: The first year I started keeping track was 2023
2023 - 1 T-14-
38 eggs
28 nestlings
26 fledged
2024
67 eggs
56 nestlings
54 fledge
2025
Added another T-14 & 4 gourds
157 eggs
140 young
126 fledgling

This is my best year yet I had 157 eggs 140 Young and 126 successfully fledged. The houses are empty now and it is sooo very quiet ,but I’m already looking forward to next year. The Martin still come around some in the mornings but it’s mostly subadults I figure the older ones are leaving, and I’m so happy to hear about all the Martins everyone else is raising the more Martin raised the better.

Hi Laura,
Congrats on a wonderful season and appriciate the lessons learned parts of your posts. All will benefit!

I think your upgrade to a new house will go ok, I understand the rules...put the new one up near the old then take the old one down after a season, but your colony is old enough now to accept just fine. We removed a trio mini castle, replaced it with a lonestar goliad before they arrived, no problems at all. Almost a full house.

Good job on that snake!

I too would like to do more nest checks during egg laying but perhaps after retirement 🤔 my personal preference will be to increase nest checks during hatching, id like to intercede if eggs become capped, but again I need more time! I catch them when I do and call it a win.

Have you thought about a blink camera in the house? It is an eye opening experience! And addicting, so be warned!

Sorry so late, some changes here at the home colony...moved two gourd racks, did some upgrades, built a rack hub, and a bunch of spar o doors, list goes on!

Hope your off season is as productive as your season was!
Regards,
Tom
