Martin project for Crocker Summer School.

Hi All,

We had the purple martin and fish day for the Crocker Summer School on June 23rd. We had 51 kids and 6 adults. The first part of the day Jerry Downing, with the department of Missouri Conservation held a Q and A forum about purple martins. He also took down a gourd rack and showed the students various stages of baby birds. Jerry also brought 16 fishing poles from the fishers department so all the kids could fish. They spent the remainder of the day catching lots of fish. They will have a fish fry next week at their school.
I want to thank Jerry, the Missouri department of conservation, and the Missouri Fisheries for their support with this school project. We hope this experience will motivate students to become future landlords. Here are a few pictures of our great martin day:

I want to share a funny story with the Forum about your site. As you know, I drove by it earlier this year on my way back to St. Louis, from Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. I had never seen a "super" colony.

You are in a very rural area in the middle of southern Missouri, surrounded by beautiful rolling pastureland. I knew you were near Richland, Mo. but I didn't have good directions. So I stopped in town -- very small town -- at Casey's Quick Mart and asked if anybody knew about the big big martin colony. I just got funny looks.

Then, I drove around the corner to a filling station that has an old Trio house out in front -- figured they'd know. Sure enough, the station owner gave me detailed directions almost right down to one-tenth of a mile and look left!

I guess we martin folks just gotta stick together.

Great story.
We were hoping you would be able to join us for our martin day. Maybe next year. Sounds like your martin project in St. Louis is off to a good start.
