- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Hello Mr. Lodi.
Yep - Saturday will be day 28. They look ready, too - don't they? Yessir, those are some good looking Purple Martin nestlings, almost fledglings. I don't know why, but the first time I looked at the picture of the older nestlings it was clearer than it is now... probably our server over here... Be careful with them now - you don't want to make them jump ship before their parents are ready for them.
Hey, have you tried whistling at the little ones when you want to take their picture? They'll jerk those little heads up and open wide. That's a good trick to remember when you need to feed them, too.
I'm so happy for you, Mr. Lodi. Good job!
