The old Trio Grandpa we've been using has a very annoying characteristic: when being raised, it produces a horrible metal-on-metal shrieking noise.
Has anyone else had this problem? We've tried applying graphite powder and other lubricants to the pole, with no luck. The house was built by my father, and so I do not know what might be making the noise, apart from some internal component I cannot see.
Any ideas on how to quickly address this issue, since we're seeing more and more scouts in the area?
Would the noise cause problems for the martin chicks? I'm guessing so.
Available on-site: coarse grit sandpaper, some files, various handtools in a Craftsman rolling toolchest.
thanks in advance, folks!
Trio Grandpa makes horrible noises, ideas anyone?
I have the same house and the same problem. Somewhere I recently read about how to fix that. I think it is a metal bracket under the roof that keeps the pole centered and it is literally metal scraping metal. This article said they took to metal bracket off and replaced it with a homemade plywood version and it was much, much quieter. It can cause older feldglings to jump prematurely from the nest when raising the house back up after nest checks. You can place a rolled up sock or cloth with a long string attached into each nest containing the older nestlings. After the house has been raised and the nestlings have had a chance to calm down, maybe 5 minutes or so, pull the cloths out by the strings. The only other choice is to stop making nest checks once the nestlings reach about 20 days or so. I plan to change the bracket out on mine next year. Hope this is helpful. Best of luck...

Hey Aggie,
I have a NH MSS 8 which is basically the same as yours, but 8 compartments. Used it for 3 years now same problem. I'm sure it may frieghten the chicks, but I've never had any jump out. I'm thinking of getting some plastic tubing and cutting long way and seeing if that will fix the noise.
