Hi,
I still have Martins hanging around. They no longer spend the night but approx 20 - 25 visit early every morning and periodically throughout the day. The "flock" is made up of ASY's (M/F), SY's (HM/F) and youngins (HY's). I am wondering, are they most likely my birds, visiting birds or migrating birds?

My guess is birds flying to Premigratory roosts. Maybe those with more experience will chime in, and you are north of me. But (IMO) this late in the season, they don't take the babies on the "grand tour" for to much time like HY's earlier in the season.

Nanette, there is no way of knowing. My opinion is that many of them are your birds if the roost is nearby. If the roost is a great distance, then it could be migrating martins.

Hey Nanette!
I too have martins here every day in SW Missouri
20 to 40 show up in the mornings about 9:00 and hang until 6pm or so... I don't know where they go or if they're "mine" or passersby or what. I know of premigratory roosts in St. Louis and Tulsa but they are hundreds of miles away! I'm thinking there must be a roost closer than that to me but I have spent many mornings hovering over the doppler radar site looking for that elusive circle to no avail
I would love to see one in person and I thank those who have posted pics of roosts for us to enjoy. If anyone knows of a roost in SW MO, please post!

Hi,
I guess I should just be glad I can still wake up to their song because too soon from now.....
Hopefully, next season I can band my nestlings so I will know for sure. The entire flock doesn't stay all day. They break up and come back in small groups throughout the day and then seem to all come back in the morning. At least I think they are the same ones coming back in small groups throughout the day.
What is the site to find the doppler?

Hi Nanette,
Do you know where Dale City is? My brother and father live there and I spend several years there as well. I am trying to convince my dad to put up some gourds because I suspected they would be in that area and you confirm it now if its the same Woodbridge, Va in Prince William County.
He said I will have to put it up for him and I am in Austin Texas.....
I would think that your visitors are alittle of both. That is, your own birds and visitors coming through and checking out your site. You still have a lot of birds coming over too........

Hi Nanette
Still large numbers of martins here in southern New England. And some
still with young in nests. By next week most should be gone and i will be happy they will be in a much warmer area. Its been on and off again rain
not the most perfect weather about 40% of my birds have left but all the SY
have been left behind with there young. I am sure you will see other south
bound birds in the next few weeks. Ray

Hi Matt,
Dale City is just around the corner. I e-mailed you and would be delighted if your dad would like help in starting his colony!
Martin man,
I am happy to hear that you still have 60% of your birds! Those Yankee-birds must love their home!
I had several renest attempts this year which put my last fledglings about a week ago. I think that some of my "visitors" are those nestlings because they keep going into that cavity. This weekend I am visiting the roost on the Maurice River in NJ. That will be my last Martin "fling" before my empty-nest-syndrome hits and it is time to tackle the arduous task of cleaning all 57 gourds/cavities!

- Martin Colony History: I moved to South Florida, from Delaware, in August of 2015.
I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.
At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.
At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.
Hi Nanette!
My martins and their offspring had all left, or at least I thought they had, but last weekend 3 martins spent the night in my MSS-8 house one night and the next night 6 spent the night in that same house. They all crammed into one condo even though there were four available in that house as well as two T.H. gourds remaining.
I do not know if they were my martins or not but I assume they were as they only wanted to get into that one condo. They sat on the roof of my neighbor's house until nearly dark and then they all flew over to the Trio house and went into the Excluder entrance. I had 58 young fledge this season.

Hi, Nanette,
Last of mine fledged Sunday. Still getting lots of visitors and a small group spends the night each night. Not sure if they're my birds or travelers.
