Have you ever found Cigarette Butts in your Martin nests?

It is a interesting study. I have never found cigarette butts in any of my martin housing but, it is something to think about.

My husband found a cigarette in a nest once, I think - and I've seen subadults pick up cig butts at a roost, when they were getting grit on ground, and once when a very bold sy guy was courting an adult female.

I can see it now........next summer all the non smoking landlords raiding the public ash trays on the street.

I found one in a nest that also had lots for little pieces of glass!

Peggy, I found glass shards and dead babies at season end once. I suspect might have been fed as grit, and may be an urban hazard to martins. They would not encounter broken glass naturally -- nor plastic gourds of course, nor cigarette butts.

- Martin Colony History: 2010 we had just one sy male all summer
2011 we had the same male come back but eventually brought home a female and had five eggs but were infertile
2012 we had our first two chicks but lost them
2013 we fledged six and had two pair
2014 we fledged 13 from four pairs
2015 we fledged 24 from 6 pairs
