Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

My gourds were hung a couple hours ago.. just in case

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

I have been busy hanging gourds on the outside. All that I have seen is a bunch of starlings. Have put up 150, got 100 more gourds to go!

2017 - Full house for first time. 24 gourds all occupied. :-)

We have a huge storm arriving via the west coast, due to hit Tx Hill Country Tues & Wed. Also recalling the 3-day ice storm we had Feb 26-28 a few years back. Never got above freezing for 3 days. So hope they hold off at least til end of February for our area. I'll be happy reading about y'alls welcome home parties for a while longer.

Gonna start adding pine straw to my housing this week. It's gonna be a busy week, but hopefully I can get at least one house up. My martins don't usually return until early February, but I'll be ready in case someone shows up early!

It was pretty nice here yesterday so I unplugged my gourds.
Not many starlings around so far this year but the SREHs are doing a good job.
Just gotta control the EHSs and I should be good go to.
Watching the weather and the fronts coming in from the South.

COME ON PURPLE....just not too soon!
Cheers,
Joe

Finally should be getting some much needed rain around here this week. newman said it has been over 100 days since we had over an inch of rain.
Projected to get 2 to 3 inches over the next couple of days.

It will be interesting to see if this low pressure system brings any martin in over the next week.

Yes, the next couple of days look pretty good for rain, but we need more than we will get. Not complaining, though, as any rain will help provide insects for the martins later on.

The US drought monitor maps show how badly rain is needed from TX right up through the center of US, plus other areas too. http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/

Hey everyone.

They said three to five inches for us in two days. Wish it was 5 inches in 14 days.

Don't know what it takes to get to exceptional, but this drought is as bad as anyone under 60 can remember and that includes some tough times in the 80's.
