When soaking natural gourds with copper sulfate, do you cut out the inspection, entrance and drain holes before tou soak the gourds so you can treat the inside of the gourd?[/u]

Yes, soaking the inside bowl area is the goal.

Yep, what Louise said. I think I use 1lb. to 5 gal. of water, soak for 15 - 20 min. each, completely submerge.

It's not for disinfecting - it's a preservative that prevents fungus, etc, so gourd won't rot from moisture.

Mark,
It was great to meet you at the Purple Martin Field Day! How are those gourds coming along? Sounds like you are working on them! Good luck turning them into good martin housing.

Have used the liquid mixture inside my gourd bowls...I like to drill the drain holes first so maybe the liquid soaks into the sides of the drain holes. Not sure it helps retard rot, but do have a lot of gourds in use for 8 years now.

Take care not to splash the liquid mixture into your eyes, or rub your eyes.. with dried mixture on your hands. it's a little caustic..but I can still type some.
