Sad to report that we were unsuccessful in our initial attempt to start a colony at Hillcrest Elementary School this year. I took the Alamo and Troyer gourds down, cleaned them up and they'll be ready to try again next year.
Not sure what the numbers say for this area, but i did not see as many martins as i usually do around my parts of town.
At the school site in the spring and early summer I did observed some martins flying in the area and taking close looks at the housing, but never much serious interest.
The most interesting thing I saw was a Coopers hawk attack and try to fly off with one of decoys.

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

All of the back to school ads, posts and pictures from my FB friends about school has made me realize that I am now old. I LIKE IT! I don't miss that rat race at all. Trying to find sitters etc...
But PM's at a school now that would entice me back into the arena!!
