Looks like I may be getting the 4th pair, I am on cloud 9 where-ever that is? I think it is an expression to use when very excited or pleased./ Both fit me very well. Still have several visitors stopping off and today captured two sparrows. I better sign off at this time, cause the message may sound like real bragging. I am so appreciative of all my martin posting friends that kept encouraging me through the years, kept saying one day it would happen. AND NOW !! Really happening !

- Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!
Oh Delma I am so jealous, don't ever think you are bragging to much. I believe anyone who is wanting martins and have worked hard to attract them deserves to brag. I am very happy for you, must be a awesome feeling.
I know I will do my share of bragging if I ever get any. happy days are here to stay for you the way it sounds. Sharon

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
Congrats Delma. You waited a long time & can now enjoy all they bring to us

I am so happy for you. Your posts for the past years were heart wrenching. I am so glad you have birds that will be nesting for you. You deserve to have your houses fill up with martins for as long as you have waited. Good luck with your martins this season.

- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Looked out to one of the houses in the front yard this morning and saw 8 martins on top of the house and two or three on adjoining house. They stayed several minutes, left and then returned for second time. I thought they might have forgotten to check floor plan to see if they could be comfortable for a few months. The house in the back yard is still very busy and sparrows keep doing their best to move in. Will remove their nest again this evening. The martins seem to be getting more aggressive I have found the sparrows like white corn chips, so keeping the trap baited., Administered

Delma, congrats, I too am soooo happy for you. I smiled as I read your post. I hope to have your feeling soon as I have many visitors now. Keep up with the great job, it sounds like they are telling you they like it.
