Thanks to the vision and hard work of PMCA member Gene Chianelli there is a new Purple Martin Site located at the Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Virginia. Gene sought and obtained funding for his project from a support group called The Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park. The PM site is adjacent to the Park's Discovery Center and it is anticipated that the PM site will become an important part of the Discovery Center's Nature Studies Program and will be enjoyed by many visitors.
Acting as PMCA Mentors Gene and I helped select the site location, helped obtained the proper equipment and provided guidance in implementing the proper protocols necessary to attract and maintain martins. The new colony is off to a good start as it is already home to five martins which includes a SY pair, a SY male, and a pair of ASY martins.
As you can see the PM colony is located in a beautiful location. Pictured in the photo (L to R) are PMCA Mentors Bill Pecoraro and Gene Chianelli and SML Park's Naturalist Interpreters David Goode and Jeanette "Jet" Lawler.

Wonderful job! Congrats and THANKS to you all - projects like this one help introduce more people to Purple Martins, and some will fall in love with our friends, and want to provide homes for them.
