Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

Well to everyone who has kept me thinking positive. I greatly appreciate that. I'm not sure if I can call myself a landlord with one PM. But I guess there is no rule book that says I can't. We just had a down pour and I looked out and he's preening all by himself on the power line. I just don't get it. Such a good looking ASY male too! He has had several females circle today. Must be all taken. I wonder if females are being out numbered by males? One good thing is he still is trying. (His time running short). I have had a lot more martins to watch this yr. than last yr. Enjoyed every bit of it to. Thanks to all and get those babies out there safe and sound.

Sharon,
Somebody told me last year after my one fledgling successfully launched, that THEN I was a landlord. So I suppose we are a hostess with the mostest until fledging occurs. But this year I feel like a purple widow, ha. Enjoy your fellow; it will happen fast when the right gal says "yes". It was like that for me last year. Hang in there.

I sure hope with all the lookie loos you have had this year that some of them will bring their young by and show them what a beautiful place you have. I seen that happen here last year where the parents seemed to bring their youngsters by my place.

You may still have a chance until the end of June. I sure have my fingers crossed for you.

Yeah I am hoping some female flies by and has to get to it. I'm thinking if he spreads out more to find one. He just stays in this area and bringing in the same ones. Most likely he is the SY that was here last year. If so this is his second yr. without. He is getting educated for next year!!!!!! Always something to look forward to.

Hi Mary, maybe turn your dawn song on. I have been playing mine all day. I turned it back on yesterday morning. It just seems to lighten things up. It not going to do any more harm than what has happened already. When I got back from weekend I had to, seemed to get things hooping. Seen a lot of birds yesterday.

Sharon, from your profile I see you have houses and gourds but are they natural gourds? I didn't have much luck until I hung some natural gourds and modified my houses to large 6x12 compartments.
2010, first year 2 breeding pair
2011, 4 pair
2012, 13 pair
2013, 50% occupancy
2014, around 90% occupancy. last count 134 eggs and hatching...

Yeah I have natural gourds for the other birds. They did not get big enough for the martins. BB's are in them. I won't let them in martin site. May get some from Amish, they have some in Ava,Il. Thanks for suggestion :)
