I had been questioning if becoming a landlord was the right thing. The last few months I've been blasted by the screeching sounds of the dreaded you know whats. The HOSP seemed to be everywhere waiting for me to open up the housing. I have two trap doors, and my husband has the 22 to eliminate them. But, I get no satisfaction from killing them, I actually hate it. And I've seen first hand what they did to my little chickadees. So I wondered if I made a mistake, if I'm going to be a landlord, I have to be a responsible one. Then March 17 came and I heard the beautiful sound. Less than a week later at least 12-15 of my colony has returned. The sights and sounds of them have brought back what I've missed the last 8 months. I don't even hear the HOSP screeches anymore. Now I'm back to being the motivated PM protector I need to be. Ahhh, yes, it is worth it.

You said it perfectly, word for word. How many times I have wondered the same thing... But after a 1 pair start in 2013, I was martinless last year, and who knows this year? I figure that whatever I do to make things better for the native birds on my property, all will be better off. That is probably the toughest test for us Wannabees and Re-Starts. Best Wishes to you this year for a wonderful martin season.

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
Tammybears, I've missed you on here! I've wondered how your colony was doing. My first returnees came last Sunday and now I am setting up at a craft show in Woodward OK. This is my third year at this show and I always hate to leave my PM's. However, near to these fairgrounds I hear martins every year! As I unload and reload. Last year I think I identified the house. This year they just might have a weird lady from KS with "Jelly Lady" on her front van tag knock on their door. I want to tell them how their colony lifts my spirits. See if they know about this site.
Speaking of lift your spirits...I'm sorry about Josie. I lost my Charlie 12/27/14. I still grieve. In Feb '14 I lost my dad. The return of my martins and their beautiful noise lifts me. It reminds me how life continues year to year and how much of a blessing they are.
Have a wonderful season I hope and dang if I don't still struggle with sparrow control issues too.
