Photo Of My Newest Gemini With Purple Martins

I currently have three Gemini gourd racks in my colony and each has 24 gourds including Troyer Horizontals with cling plates and with tunnels/porches, Super Gourds with outside/inside porches, and Excluder Gourds with outside/inside porches. The Gemini is my favorite commercial gourd rack and the two tier ring set-up is aesthetically appealing and well-liked by the martins in my colony. The Gemini comes with a three inch square aluminum pole and I use a 14 foot one rather than the standard 16 foot. I prefer to have my gourd racks and houses no more than 14 feet high to minimize the chances of wind damage during violent storms. Higher the system, the more stress is placed at the bottom of the pole above the ground stake.

Here is a photo of my newest Gemini with martins in residence. This rack has 12 Troyer Horizontals with cling plates and 12 with tunnels/porches. I see no preference between the two designs by the martins. I like each about the same.

Just a short martin colony update…

Right now, my colony is thriving and I believe I have between 250 and 300 pairs of martins and more SY males are now arriving in larger numbers. The SY migration appeared to be slow at first but now we are seeing many SYs trying to roost in our colonies each evening, mine and my neighbor Bob’s site. There must have been well over 50 that came in this evening, April 19, 2016 and they cause considerable stress to the permanent residents as the SYs try to force their way into cavities already occupied. Based on what is happening with the SY returns, I believe we should match the martin numbers we had in 2015 and attract over 500 pairs in our two colonies. By late May I should know.

Our five satellite martin colonies appear to be doing well for the most part and the houses are often covered with martins. Our satellite colony located about three miles from our personal sites is having a recurring Accipiter hawk problem and this may be a resident hawk. Last year I observed a Cooper’s hawk around the colony during June.

Man Steve you always have some great pictures!! I love it when I see your updates. My "Update" is I have an ASY pair in a Super gourd that are building a nest and an ASY pair in an Excluder gourd, I also have an SY pair in the mini trios as well as some bachelors that are hanging around. This a.m. I had around 10 to 15 martins in and out of gourds and on the trios. I put the binoculars on 2 ASY males that were hanging around all morning with no mates. There are also some SY males visiting all day long. No other females except the ones paired up.

James/Ossnap, I am glad y'all like the Gemini! The only thing I don't like is assembling one! It is more time consuming that other gourd racks and it can be a little challenging to get the rings to line on the support bars. But that is probably just me!

Tor, I have a 24 Super System like yours and a 36 Super System. I like them but the Gemini looks more appealing to me with the two tier ring set-up. Thanks for sharing a photo of your 24 Super System; it looks great.

Tim, I am real happy for you as your new colony is growing! You still have all of April and most of May to attract more martins.

Tony, I have a bunch of the K24 racks and I like them a lot. They are easy to assemble and the martins do well in them. But the Gemini is still my favorite and I would probably rather have more Gemini racks than K24s.

Hey Steve,
Your Gemini Racks sure do look good. I finally got one a couple weeks ago, but will not install it until next year. My friend Davis in Texas also tells me they are a pistol to put together.! Had to block the round entrances on all my THG's... The Starlings were trying to take over - killed 1 ASY male.
Will modify all the entrances to my THG's.

Hey Rodger,

One of my Gemini racks is full of martins and the other two only have one or two vacancies. I believe I have 300+ pairs of martins now and more are still arriving daily. We are really INFESTED with martins right now.

Starlings have been a non-issue for us and I have shot or trapped any that show up. Martins are flourishing in our round hole gourds/houses.

I know you will like your Gemini and so will the martins!
