Martin Colony History: Put up the colony in 2015 and had a mean and nasty fight with the sparrows, yet one pair stayed and five fledged.

Though it would be neat to share

Classic video!
Here is some interesting "behind the scenes" information about that video, provided by our beloved Louise Chambers:
Louise Chambers wrote:The martin segment was included in the final segment of Attenborough's The Life of Birds, which focused on interactions between birds and people. The BBC originally contacted Jamie Hill, then PMCA's director, about filming Black Vultures nesting on office buildings in Brazil. He told them Purple Martins would be of much greater interest, smart man!

The BBC crew filmed Attenborough visiting the oil refinery in Manaus, where martins roost during the nonbreeding season. Not all of those martins are purple martins, either - some are Gray-breasted Martins and Brown-chested Martins, which breed and winter in South America. If you take a close look during the video the Brown-chested are not hard to pick out. Update 4(4) included an article about the refinery roost.

The second portion of the martin segment was filmed at the PMCA's site in Edinboro and some nearby colonies in NW PA and NE OH. We enjoyed working with the crew for several days, and Attenborough came in on the last day to film his onscreen bits at the housing. The book and DVD from The Life of Birds are still available and really good, too. I imagine some libraries have both, & they are worth looking for.
