Starting to get depressed as about half of my babies have fledged(about 300) but its a beautiful sight at night as they circles around the houses then fight for spots to get in. I don't know have much longer I will have them before they roost. I have about 300 more to fledge.

Wow. On 6-25 you had 500 babies and 200 eggs with a 102 pair. Thats almost a 7 egg average. You must be feeding a supplement or something. Whats your secret?

Us too Dick. The sky was filled with hundreds last night. Have about 6 more gourds to fledge. They are doing their pre migration behavior in the evening. My guess is that within a week most of my resident martins will be gone. Ended up being a great year with a dodgy start.

Take care

Dick, I've been waiting and waiting for the Coopers to hit us this year. Been lucky, they have not hit our colony that I am aware of this season. I have my fingers crossed especially in the evening with all of the noise and activity with the fledglings.
We have a nesting pair somewhere nearby but I've tried for 2 years to locate. Too much woodland.
I've used dove decoys for a couple of years on our pasture fencing and has saved many a martin and tree swallow.
I'm aware of their main attack lane and have placed decoys to help distract.
A random 12 gauge shot here and there in the evening and morning might help keep them away. Don't know for sure.

Good luck with the rest of your season.

Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.

Waiting for chicks to do more than sit in the doorway here in this first-year colony just north of Cincinnati in SW Ohio.

First fledge date (for six would-be flyers) projected for tomorrow, and with the Fledge Party Committee flying in each of the last several days from a neighboring colony, can only guess that South American Air Tours is starting to book roost reservations.

Handyman ---- Just Wondering... Sence you expect them to fledge tomorrow, do you expect that will happen in the early hours, 9,10 or 11 o'clock ? Do they uselly fledge in the morning or in the evening ?

Sorry Dave, I'm a newbie landlord, brand new at this fledging thing; however, the parents and a visiting "Fledge Party" (I think from a neighboring PM colony) have been very active mornings and afternoons, with very little excitement (other than feeding) starting about 6 p.m. In fact, I think the parents are sometimes withholding food (which I read about on the PMCA Forum).

Hey Dave, it sounds like you had a great year! Was searching the forum for somebody close to us, we're located between Dresden and Zanesville. We have had more jumpers than ever this year, and attributed it to the heat. We did our usual nest check/changes/head counts on July 2nd. Had less than normal, about 175 babies with 32 eggs left to hatch. Sadly we had to do an emergency check this week due to jumpers and found horrible wet nests (mostly in gourds) and many dead, 4 dead in one gourd looked to be about 20 days old!

I blame it on the weather, but you had to have had the same conditions as us. Have you heard about anyone else having a bad year in our area?
