I ask this question? If you need to find the information necessary to establish a successful martin colony where would you look? This forum has been a great help for me. The problems or questions are addressed forthwith. I can or could rely on those who have gone before to give me advice. I am reluctant to join Facebook because I am wary of their format and release of personal ID.

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
Many of us do not use nor ever will use Facebook. All the info you need is here on the forum. The only advantage to the FB page is posting photos is easier.

I do use Facebook and enjoy it very much, Lots of Information on both sites, the traffic on facebook is much more active than on this forum but it has its drawbacks just like these forums...So it all depends on what you want to use...

I too am reluctant (read wont) do facebook, personal reasons i guess. The forum has been friendly, informative and sufices for me and the needs of our martins. Works for me! Those of us more connected would migrate to facebook. Both good tools, i trust PMCA will keep both running for us. Forum has been running for a long time so there is a ton of topics to research.

- Martin Colony History: 2015 - 1 pair, not successful (Sparrows)
2016 - 1 pair, 4 young
2017 - 5 pair, 23 young
2018 - 8 pair, 40 young, two deaths most likely due to heat.
2019 - 18 pair, 74 eggs, 1 nest abandoned, all the rest successful.
2020 - 32 nests, unknown exact egg numbers, 1 death.
Quite Facebook years ago and never looked back.

- Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.

Yes. I got frustrated trying to edit something and just deleted it. Was hitting wrong keys. I'm not my best hot days trying to save martins -- I'm serious. Anyway...I am on FB a lot. It's what you make of it. It does worry me that FB has become so darn powerful, they are essentially in control of a ton of information from all kinds of individuals, organizations. Too much power in one place maybe. I'd hope non-profit groups like the PMCA would not rely entirely on them and encourage use of traditional forums such as this one, and while our martin season is winding down, I hope to post more...now that I've learned about them pixels and posting photos.

I only use FB when I have to, and only for pm related stuff. On the forum you can find what you need and it's organized. My personal comparison (and I may be wrong) the forum is like a well organized office, FB to me is like you opened the office door and threw all the stuff in. Hope everyone has/had a great pm season, my last fledged yesterday.
