Manage 7 different colonies in Colby Kansas.
I decided I wanted to make my own wing entrapment guards. I know you can buy them but I love making stuff so I decided I would take it on. This is a first prototype of what I did it’s made out of wood. But my plan is is to mold that and pour liquid plastic in it to make them plastic and I can make a lot of them. I had my first wing entrapment last year with an adult male so I figured I would go ahead and get something done. They probably won’t be done for this year because I already have a few birds here and I don’t want to start messing with all the doors again so this will be a next year project. What do you guys think. They will be 1/2 inch thick.

I think that looks great. I “think” the ones sold by the PMCA are 5/8” thick. I think thicker would be better than thinner. Do you not think that it would be important to make them go all the way to the bottom corner of the entrance? I would think that sharp angle at the bottom would be a good place for a wing to hang up.
In 17 years I’ve only had one instance of life or death wing entrapment but I have tunnels on all my gourds. It’s not uncommon for me to see a wing sticking out of a tunnel when an ASY male inside the compartment has a beak full of SY male head feathers when the SY male tries to enter the cavity.

Looks really good, but did you see this post that discuss using pvc pipe wondering if it would serve same purpose.

I was definitely thinking about it. I was going to try them out for a bit and see what happens. I went ahead and made one that will cover the entire hole. What do you think?

I did see them. They look great. I have always thought about using them for wing entrapment guards. The only reason I didn't decide to use PVC is because I didn’t want to have to glue them on the door. I would rather have them attached with bolts or screws.
