Just when I thought it was safe to go back in my house....
while taking out the trash, looked down at my supposedly empty martin house and saw one of my babies sitting on the fence under the bird house. I walked down and lifted him into the bird house. After 20 minutes or so, I went back outside and there they were...All 3 babies sticking their heads out of the cavities. I am very surprised that they returned to the house. Perhaps they were there on the previous nights also and I just did not see them.
I know they can fly but can they eat by themselves? What can feed them?
They're baaaaaack! The return of the 3 babies
Are the parents coming back for them? Check and see if the parents are feeding them. In a pinch, you can go to the pet supply store or bait shop and get some meal worms and best of all small crickets. I would sort of crunch the meal worm or crickets first before feeding them. I have heard meal worms can attach themselves inside the babies mouth if they are fully alive. For emergency, scrambled eggs work well. Also if the parents are gone, and observe that no other martins are feeding them, you should contact a local rehabber, through the county wildlife organization. There are established landlords that can help with orphan outplacement.
If the parents have abandoned them or something happended to the parents, they will have to be transfered as orphans. They will not survive for long without parents.

The parents often bring the babies back at night, so this may also be the case. The parents may go out and feed. During the day, the parents get the babies to fly high in the sky, they catch a bug, and give it to the babies high in the sky, they are teaching them how to hunt.
I am gald that they are back

The babies and the parents came back last night again. I kept my one baby that wouldnt fly with me all day, fed him mealworms and crickets. and his appetitite was really good. At sundown, I put him back into the martin house. This morning, all the others had gone and he was still there. I took him back to the house with me and have fed him today again.
I can see no reason why this bird wont fly. He looks fine. He roosts just fine. He's eating well. He was really excited last evening to be back in his home. When his mother came, he became a flutter-bird. She did not feed him at all...so I'm glad I did.
I am going to put him back into the house this evening again. In the morning, I am going to leave him there a little longer and see if I can coax him to fly. Also I want to make sure his mother doesnt forget him cause I need for her to teach him to hunt. Maybe his instincts will kick in soon.
I called a Wildlife person and she said just to keep doing what I am doing. Maybe tomorrow will be more successful.
