This is my first year and everyone has been so helpful in making it a successful year. I am going to add more gourds next year in hopes of attracting more moms and pops.
All Gone

All of my babies are gone. The entire group (moms, pops and babies) come by every few days with friends and extended family to visit. I guess they will be all gone before long. I will miss them and their chatter. Should I leave the doors open. I sure don't want to get any sparrows to thinking that they have a new abode.

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
No, it is not necessary to keep the doors open. If you see even one sparrow on your housing, I would plug the entrances.
The season is over - but it was successful and now your housing is an "established site". The Purple Martins will be back next year and they will indeed bring their friends!!
To pass the time in a positive way - you could use the "off season" to educate yourself. There are many good articles containing a wealth of knowledge on the PMCA website. The Forum will slow down - but, there are still people here and checking it periodically.
Good luck to you for many great seasons in the future.

I leave every thing open till September then I'll clean and close them up. Time to start thinking of what I'll add for next year.

Two out of nine years we have had Purple Martin nestlings still in the housing after the 4th of July. The first time it was a single female with her late nest that held her here until around July 15th. This year, we still have 3 nests to fledge. One will be 28 days old tomorrow 7-12; one on 7-15 and a final on 7-21.
This has been the strangest season I have ever seen...

The entire family is here tonight. I guess maybe they might hang around for a few more days. I have the windows open and am listening to them sing. I will have to play the Dawn Song to make it through the winter.

This morning I had between 25 and 30 PMs. I guess they are visitors heading south. It is just great to have a few more days of their singing and antics.
